4 Lessons to Learn from Disney Princesses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WPUNJ chapter.

Think of your favorite Disney princess movie and think of all the good messages it represents. We all know the overall lessons of our favorite disney movies, but what about the more subtle and almost overlooked lessons presented by each story?

The Little Mermaid

Of course we know that Ariel wanted to find the man she saved and finally get out of the water. She sings a whole song about how wonderful human life would be. Did you ever consider the fact that Ariel is illiterate? Think about it. If she could read, she would have actually read the contract she signed and known all the clauses of signing over her voice. She also would have been able to tell Eric who she was with a simple note. READING IS FUNDAMENTAL.

Mulan

Mulan defies all Chinese tradition by taking her father’s place in the army. Before that, what can we learn from her? She tried her hardest to be the best bride and bring honor to her family through becoming a wife. Obviously, she wasn’t able to. She compromised herself to please others, and it all went terribly, so you need to LOVE AND ACCEPT YOURSELF FOR WHO YOU TRULY ARE.

Princess and the Frog

First of all, we need a remake of Princess and the Frog, where the main characters are human the entire movie. First black princess, and she’s a frog for most of the movie??? Anyway, as simple as this story may seem, Tiana taught us a lot. She taught the value of dreams, and that with hard work anything can be accomplished. She also taught us that YOU SHOULDN’T JUDGE A BOOK BY IT’S COVER. Not only are you being rude and judgemental, but you are also blocking good people, like Prince Navine, from coming into your life.

Frozen

Elsa, after gaining her powers, felt that she needed to isolate herself for the safety of others. She even isolated herself from her only living relative. She learns the hard way that YOUR PROBLEMS DON’T HAVE TO BE YOURS ALONE. There are lots of people who want to see you happy, but you have to willingly make your most hidden parts vulnerable, so the healing can begin.

All the Disney princesses have something to teach us more than just the basic moral presented. There are smaller, maybe even more important lessons that are frequently overshadowed. Rewatch your favorite princess movie and see what other hidden lessons you can find!
