Surviving Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WMU chapter.

It’s that time of year again; Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Whether it’s your first Valentine’s Day being in a relationship or a day to remind you–once again–how single you are, it’s coming, people. Get ready! While some may be consumed by the bitterness of a day without a ninety-nine cent card and a piece of chocolate shaped like a heart, others are glowing in a pink haze. Single or not–reading this, my friends, will get you through Valentine’s Day 2012.

So, you’re the one doodling his or her name into your notebook a thousand times and smiling every time you think of them? While it may be annoying to some, don’t let an attitude from anyone bother you! You are a lucky person; enjoy this day with your special someone. It only comes once a year! Just do us all a favor and keep the PDA to a minimum. It’s also good to remember that although this is a day specifically reserved to put a little extra lovin’ in your relationship, it’s always important to show a person you care about them EVERY day. Special dates or little presents are a great way to keep your relationship alive. It can be Valentine’s Day every day!

Moving on to all of us single people on this oh-joyous day of love…while it may not be the most fun day, it’s not the end, I promise. Enjoying yourself can be just as much fun without a Valentine! It can always make the day a little lighter when finding a friend to be your Valentine. It’s a great way to go out, have fun, and celebrate your love for each other! Even if it’s not the same kind of love we all may be yearning for, it’s always a mood-booster to hear someone tell you they care! Sing sappy songs, go out to dinner, eat an entire box of chocolate, or see the new Nicholas Sparks movie, The Vow (which is sure to make your heart melt). You don’t need a significant other to feel loved! Be thankful for the wonderful family and friends you have with you now; don’t pine and mope around when you can still be out having a great time this Valentine’s Day!

Although some may find this day pointless and dreary, it’s just a normal day. There is nothing to fear! Whether you’re in a blooming relationship or couldn’t define the word “relationship” if your life depended on it, stay positive! Spread the love every day to those who matter to you, be patient, and in time Valentine’s Day will soon become more than just a day of the year!
