Styling The Black & White Trend For Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

One of the biggest trends for Spring 2013 is the black and white trend. This one’s sure to stick around for a while, and even if it doesn’t, ‘black and white’ never goes out of style. Solid black and white pieces can look a bit formal when worn together, so look for solid pieces of different or interesting textures. If you can, find two-toned items that feature both black and white.

Look for interesting textures or patterns. If adding colors isn’t your thing, keep black and white interesting by wearing unique textures and patterns. Pieces with black and white polka dots are easy to find, but you can rewrite this popular outfit formula by wearing polka dotted pants with a two toned faux leather jacket.  For a flirtier look, keep your eye out for lace or eyelet details in clothing pieces, or for sparrow-printed or striped items.

Pair it with spring pastels. Refresh these two classic colors for spring by working bright pastels into your look. Cinch your waist with a colorful belt, or add a bright pop of pink with a statement shoe. If you’re more daring, colored pants can elevate your look to something trendier and bolder. A structured pant keeps it professional yet fun, while a bright orange pant is perfect for pairing with breezy printed tops.

Mix classic pieces with trendy statement items. Use timeless pieces already in your closet for the basis of your black and white outfits. Then add trendy items to make your looks modern and fresh. A carefree striped dress gets a much-needed update with a funky hat and wide belt, while a classic LBD and schoolgirl blouse stay relevant when a trendy leopard print belt and chunky cognac wedges are added.
