Pick It or Skip It: What to Bring to W&M

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

It can be overwhelming packing for college. If you search online, you will find hundreds of packing lists recommending everything from toothpaste to TVs. It’s important to recognize that each campus (and individual) is unique and requires different items. Since William & Mary is definitely a unique school, consider these upperclassman tips as you determine what you should (and shouldn’t) bring to campus.

Pick: A fan

This is one of the more obvious ones, but dorm rooms can be incredibly hot during the first months of the semester. If you have allergies, you can submit a request for a window fan.

Skip: Out of season clothes

It’s tempting to bring your winter jacket, but don’t forget that you will be going home for breaks and can always bring back more clothing pieces. This will save you a lot of space!

Pick: Extra Sheets

Sheets are a pain to wash, so it’s definitely nice to have an extra set to hold you over until you go home on break.

Skip: Alarm Clock

An alarm clock seems like it would be an important one, but most freshman end up using their cell phone alarms because of the convenience.

Pick: Rain boots

Weather in Williamsburg is interesting. You’ll definitely need rain boots/gear to brave the often-large puddles.

Skip: Candles

You will get in trouble if you have a candle in your dorm, so it’s best not to risk it.

Pick: That formal dress you haven’t worn in a while

Believe it or not, you’ll probably get a lot of use out of your old homecoming dress. Most organizations on campus have social events such as formals that a dress will be useful for. Also, King and Queens Ball at the end of the year is an all-campus event that requires formal/cocktail attire.

Skip: High school t-shirts

Once you get to college, you will be getting a variety of different t-shirts from clubs and Greek organizations if you decide to join. William & Mary will also provide orientation t-shirts. High school t-shirts are also an easy way to stick out as a freshman, so save those for your PJs!

Pick: Stapler

A lot of people forget this one. Professors don’t have much patience for students scrambling to find a stapler for their paper they’re about to turn in. They’re hard to find in campus buildings, so it’s good to bring your own.

Skip: Iron and Ironing Board

This is on every recommended college packing list, but probably unnecessary- unless you are in the business school or often dress up for professional events. Consider talking to your roommate about sharing!

Pick: Airborne

You will definitely need this into the winter months. Your roommate may have the flu and Airbone is one of the best ways to keep (or at least try to keep) yourself from getting sick.

Skip: (Most) Kitchen Equipment

Most residence halls and duty offices have kitchen items that you and your hallmates can use. These items usually include cookie sheets, cake pans, toaster ovens, and cutting boards. It’s definitely helpful to bring your own bowls and utensils, but many other items can be rented out. If you can’t find an item in the duty office or decide you would like to buy your own kitchen supplies, don’t forget that Target’s just a trolley ride away!

So that’s the end of the list! Hopefully these tips make the process of moving in a little less overwhelming- don’t worry, it’s not that bad! Also, remember that even if you forget something during the frenzy of packing, it’s easy to take a trip to the store. OAs and upperclassmen are there to help you along the way. Welcome, Class of 2016! We’ll see all of you soon!
