Not long after January, even as early as April, many of us are plotting plans for summer. We’re already making the lists of what we’re going to do to ensure we’re our fittest, smartest, most fabulous selves when back-to-school rolls around. Almost every girl has had that dream of leaving school, and totally reinventing herself– almost like a magic makeover. We will be tanner, have nicer hair, a totally chic new wardrobe, and better makeup. On top of that, for many of us, this isn’t just another school year, this is our first year in COLLEGE, and you can imagine what some of us freshies vowed to do over the summer. I’m no exception– let’s just say there were things along the lines of actually being fluent in French and getting a Megan Fox-esque beach bod.
Yes, most of our summer dreams are slightly unrealistic. But now, fellow freshman (and any of you other tribe girls out there), is the perfect time to make some goals and stick to them. You say that you’re going to audition for a cappella, but will you stick to your word? Will you really avoid the desserts in the cafeteria? Do you have the super-human strength to get up early enough every morning to go to the gym before those 8 am classes? (I seriously applaud you.)
Bear with me, HC ladies. That might sound a bit defeatist, so let me change my tone- if you really want to do these things, make the promise now. It will be too easy once you get comfortable on campus to find excuses for falling through. Make a list, or as cheesy as it sounds, write a letter to yourself. You need something that will you in a few weeks of how important that goal is to you now.
By now, you’ve probably already settled into your dorms, and maybe even started to settle into a routine. Make sure those goals find a place in your new life within the first week, otherwise, it’ll be tough sticking to them. So, without further ado, hear are a few of my own “freshman year resolutions” that I’m sure many of you might find on your lists too.
Back to School 2011: This year, I will…
- Leave the high school drama behind. This is NOT Degrassi, this is William and Mary- i.e. WAY BETTER and although hopefully it’s not the BEST time of your life (I mean, if the best part of your life is over at 22, that would be a downer), it’s pretty darn close.
- ACTUALLY join the clubs I said I would when I first scrolled through that giant list of them on the William and Mary web page. Despite my prominent two left feet, I will attempt ballroom dancing club, and despite my total lack of athletic ability, I might even go for a non-competitive sports club.
- Be the person I want to be. If you’re one of those kids who went to school with the same people you went to daycare with, this is an opportunity to reinvent yourself. I only know three other incoming freshmen from my high school– be independent now, or forever hold my peace.
- Avoid the freshman 15 at ALL costs, and go to the gym at least 3 times a week. Maybe even drag myself out of bed and go for a run some mornings–but not sure if I’m ready to commit to that.
- Resist the urge to cram my entire wardrobe, all of my pictures, and all favorite books into my tiny dorm room.
- Try my best not to lunge at wahoos’ throats when I’m home for break (I live in Cville). And they claim that they go to the “better” school. We will see after September’s football game up in Cville.
- Make friends with the best people ever at the best school ever. Oh yeah, and have some ridiculously fun times while I’m at it.
Good luck with everything girls! I’ll be right there cheering for you- and going through it all, too!
