Everyday we’re shuffling. This year’s W&M Symphony Orchestra played their finale “Stars and Stripes Forever” while under the conduction of the Shufflebot. After weeks of rehearsal, and costume preparation the orchestra had a very successful Halloween concert as usual. The entire auditorium was sold out and every seat (and aisle) was filled with parents and friends dressed in their cutest and spookiest attire. Everyone was dressed up to set the mood for the popular piece “In the Hall of the Mountain King” which was followed by a sinister Cinderella Suite that ended in applause when then the cymbals chimed “midnight”. Then entered a “professional” magician, Williamsburg’s own William the Conjuror who I had the pleasure of meeting for the first time tonight. Apparently he is well known in the area and he did a number of tricks with rings, however his magic wasn’t as half as impressive as his humor. He kept the audience laughing with his witty comments, even when one of his tricks almost ended in disaster. After a short intermission, the orchestra rocked their version of “Thriller” with a killer performance by the electric and base guitar. The magician announced the finalists in the costume contest. It came down between Cleopatra, an intense anime character, a fortuneteller, the Shufflebot from Party Rock Anthem, and Julius Caesar. While the judges were conversing, the orchestra played the popular theme from “Harry Potter” which was appropriate considering the amount of Hogwarts costumes in the orchestra and audience. Professor Poutsma then had to announce the winner, who was the crowd pleasing Shufflebot who shuffled for the audience and then had the honor of conducting the finale. It was fun for everyone, and it definitely got me in the mood for Halloween!
