Keeping Up with Domnhall Gleeson

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

You’ve probably seen the ginger haired Domnhall Gleeson on screen at some point in the last five years. You might suspect that he’s played a Weasley, and you’d be right. However, he’s played a vast range of other characters as well. Here’s a look at the evolution of his career so far to help keep up with Domnhall Gleeson.

  1. Domnhall Gleeson hopes that if he becomes enough, people will learn how to pronounce his name. The trick is to forget the Gaelic “m” and to rhyme with Tonal.

  2. When Gleeson was 16, he got his first agent just by accepting the Irish Film Award for best actor on behalf of his father. Even so, he didn’t want to be an actor just yet.

  3. Gleeson received a Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts from Dublin Institute of Technology. He studied writing and directing for film and screen, and made two short films, What Will Survive of Us and Noreen, soon afterward.

  4. His acting career started on the stage when he won a Tony nomination for his role in The Lieutenant of Inishmore written by the famous Irish playwright Martin McDonagh

  5. He played Bill Weasley in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in the same film that his father, actor Brendan Gleeson, played Mad-Eye Moody.

  6. Gleeson has played a huge range of roles, going from the unconventional love interest of About Time to a pedophile in Cavalry. Gleeson said “I found out very quickly that if I was going to work, I was going to have to work very hard to try to do different things, not just play a version of myself. That would be the only way to keep interested in acting, but also, the only way to keep working.”

  7. Gleeson believes that his breakthrough role was Konstantin Levin in Anna Karenina, which showed that he could play more romantic roles.

  8. His career accelerated after 2015 when he acted in four Academy Award nominated films: Caleb in Ex Machina, Jim Farrell in Brooklyn, Captain Andrew Henry in the Revenant, and General Hux in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

  9. He really, really, really does not want to be famous. Unfortunately for Gleeson, it may be a bit too late for that. Image Source
