Alexis’s Top 10 Romantic Holiday Movies

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WM chapter.

Christmas is right around the corner!  In the spirit of the season, there are several wonderful holiday traditions that are MUSTsSon the to-do list!  A few of my favorite things include Black Friday shopping, buying a Christmas tree, playing seasonal music, drinking hot cocoa and egg nog, making gingerbread men, and the list goes on.   As much as I love all of these things, there’s another tradition that I love a little more…watching romance movies throughout the winter holiday!  Not only can you rent wonderful holiday films from your local Blockbuster, order them from Netflix, or pop out the DVD you bought years ago, but the Hallmark and Lifetime channel constantly play the cheesiest Romantic comedies ever!  I’m sure we all have a mental list of our favorite Christmas movies, but here are a few of mine!  (These are in no particular order)

  1. The Preacher’s Wife: I love this movie!  The late Whitney Houston sings beautifully in this wonderful romance about a husband and wife finding the love once again.  With the help of a handsome angel (Denzel Washington) and in the spirit of the church, we really see what the Christmas spirit is all about.
  2. Elf: This loveable film is about a man named Buddy finding out that he is in fact not an elf, but a human!  He goes to New York to really discover himself and brings Christmas joy to a department store.  Buddy even gets a gift of his own: true love!
  3. Four Christmases: It is an extremely funny film that follows a kooky couple, Brad and Kate whose Christmas plans go awry!  They have to spend four Christmases with each of their families and many different off-the-wall things come about!  This movie is a must-see!!
  4. The Santa Clause: Tim Allen plays Scott Calvin, a man who kills Santa Claus whose life turns upside down.  He has to take over the role of Santa in order to make sure that Christmas wishes can still come true, and struggles to maintain his position at his office while going through many changes during the season of giving.
  5. Love Actually:  I saw this movie for the first time with my freshman hallmates, and loved it! This movie follows a man and his wife, a prime minister and secretary, a sarcastic singer, and the list goes on and on.  It has many of your favorite British actors including Keira Knightley, Allen Rickman, Colin Firth, Hugh Grant, and a bunch of other A-listers!
  6. The Holiday: Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet are two women living on opposite sides of the globe.  They have both lost in their attempts at life and need a change.  In order to get over their sadness during the Christmas times, they decide to switch lives.  Women and men will enjoy this wonderful Christmas flick!
  7. The Family Man: This movie looks into the dream world as a man sees himself in two different lives.  In one life, he is a successful, rich single man and in another he is a family man.  He must choose one life to live.  Will he have a Christmas miracle?  You have to watch to find out!
  8. Last Holiday: Georgia Byrd (Queen Latifah) finds out that she only has a little time left to live and so she decides to use her savings and go on an adventure.  Little does she know that in the process of living life to the fullest, she may find a love to last a lifetime.
  9. Beauty and the Beast (original) and Beauty and  the Beast: Enchanted Christmas: Both of these movies are classics and need no explanation just go watch them!
  10.  Miracle on 34th Street: A little girl wants a family and asks Santa to make her wishes come true.  In a movie about love, the holidays, and believing in Christmas miracles, Miracle on 34th street stands as a true Christmas classic!
