The classic Sconnie vs. Coastie “issue” has been around, surprisingly, for decades. The division between Sconnies and Coasties is well known throughout campus; it was even brought up in my Communication Arts 260 discussion a few days ago. And again, everyone knew how to discuss this topic and what the stereotypes entailed.
Sconnie: Typically from the Midwest, a small town most likely, and labeled a hick. Down to earth, laid back and “chill” are some of the terms associated with those who are believed to be Sconnies.
Coastie: Always from either the West or the East coast, a large city and labeled a brat. They can be found on their blackberries, going to camp, wearing Uggs and shopping.
Of course, these are stereotypes, and by no means am I saying that they are true, but it is a “common” division among our student body. Is it true? Well, someone thinks it is because there is now a Twitter page associated to the whole phenomenon. #WiscoCoastieProblems, followed by 300 tweeters, has a description that reads, “If this offends you, you are overly sensitive and have no sense of humor.” Check out some of the tweets for yourself:
“I feel like its inappropriate to wear Uggs now in this weather…thoughts?”
(A thought I know many, including myself, have had).
“This snowstorm is getting in the way between me and my half off Wednesday spray tan!!!! UGH”
(Totally happened to more than this person, who was retweeted).
“TA’s office hours are Friday 11-12. Guess we won’t be going over any papers this semester…”
(Actually that’s just everyone’s problem).
So whether you’re a Coastie or a Sconnie, or just maybe you’re even a SCONSTIE, follow #WiscoCoastieProblems on Twitter for some good laughs.
