Why You NEED to Watch Our Planet

If you’ve been on Netflix in the past few weeks, chances are their new docuseries, “Our Planet", has popped up on your screen. It focuses on the amazing beauty of our planet, while also giving information about the way the planet is changing and how it will impact the world we know and love.

Admittedly, I love a good nature documentary, so I knew right away I wanted to watch “Our Planet.” But as I watched, I realized this is more than a documentary for nature lovers or environmentalists; this is a documentary every single person should be watching. Whether or not you believe humans are causing climate change (they are) it is clear that the climate is in fact changing. This means that life as we know it will also change. “Our Planet” does an amazing job of exposing some of the seemingly miniscule connections that actually have major implications for the natural order.

Earlier this week we celebrated Earth Day, which means there is no time like the present to really get acquainted with the way the world works. Watching “Our Planet” gives you the opportunity to do that, while also letting you admire the diversity and beauty of places and animals you might not even realize exist. Scientists have been consistently issuing warnings about the climate, and it really is time for us to do something about it.

If you feel like you, as one individual, can’t have an impact on the world and the climate, I’m here to tell you that you’re wrong (this is a time where you should be happy to be told you’re wrong, I promise). There are so many things you can do, even on a small scale, that can make a difference. “Our Planet” is informative, motivating, and, to be honest, awe-inspiring. There is so much of the world that we forget to appreciate on a day to day basis, and this documentary reminds us of the incredible beauty that exists on Earth. It also motivates you to do your part in preserving and reviving the natural world. Each episode focuses on a different environment on Earth, the way it functions and how what we do as humans affects it. As a people, we need to make changes to our daily lives in order to protect the delicate balance of the planet. It's no longer something we can take as a given, and it’s high time we started doing more to save the Earth than we are to destroy it.

Even if you doubt your impact, or doubt the truth of climate change, it never hurts to have more information on a topic. Who knows, you might even find yourself thinking of the effect you have on the world around you. We can all do better, and if each person makes a few small changes, we will be astounded at the cumulative impact. So, watch “Our Planet” and I promise you, your perspective will shift a bit.
