Ignore that FOMO

Going to a Big Ten school like UW-Madison, or just college in general, there’s often pressure to go out at night, have fun, and do it all over again the next day. After all, this is the time in our lives when we’re able to escape the responsibilities of the real world and experience independence from our parents in full. Getting back to your dorm at 2 A.M. can be exhilarating, and makes you feel like your life is truly your own. However, there shouldn’t be this overwhelming, looming pressure to go out, which can sometimes feel like a burden. I’ll tell you why.

Freshman year was a culture shock for me. Going out on a Tuesday night when I have classes the next day? How crazy! I knew what I was getting into by going to a school so oriented towards having fun: that’s exactly why I chose it. It was amazing having these experiences with my friends and making memories that I’ll never forget. I was, however, unaware of the toll this lifestyle could have on my studies. The saying, “college is a game of balance”, couldn’t be closer to the truth. I found myself struggling to keep up with the fast-paced nightlife in Madison as well as my responsibilities as a student. As the second semester of freshman year rolled around and the newness of college slowly faded, I began to have a different idea on what I wanted my life to look like here.

I soon realized that going out wasn’t everything. Although the pleas from my friends on Thursday nights begging me to go out were convincing and all in good fun, they no longer held the weight they used to. I started to say “no” sometimes, and, in a way, this was more exhilarating than going out.

As a sophomore, I take pride in staying in some nights. Although I have a better handle on my school-personal life balance, I still take time to decide what’s in my best interest. I’m proud that I no longer let FOMO get the best of me. I know my freshman-year self would be, too.

So, the next time you’re tired from a hectic day of classes or work, just remember it’s not so bad to cozy up on your couch, grab a couple of your favorite snacks, and watch a movie, even when it feels like the entire world is out on the town. I promise you that you’ll thank yourself eventually.
