Why I Love Going Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Sometimes it takes a lot for me to want to head home and miss out on fun times with my friends, but other times I feel I could pack my bags and go home in a heartbeat. I never knew until college how much I appreciate coming home to my parents. As much as I love being here in Madison, there’s nothing like a quiet weekend at home—here’s why:

I love seeing my parents.

Some people don’t like hanging out with their parents, but I do. They always listen and give advice when I’m stressed out with school, they never judge me for being so weird (because I got it from them) and I know they will love me unconditionally. We usually watch a movie, talk about life, or go somewhere. But, occasionally I will sit with my parents in the living room on my phone while they play Words With Friends with each other (eyeroll).

I don’t have to ask random people on the streets asking if I can pet their dog.

We all do it on campus. But at home, I can have my OWN dog to myself and cuddle with him whenever I want. Although Toby, an adorable 11-year-old golden retriever, is not cuddly by any means, I force him to love me as much as I love him anyways. His unintentional cuteness makes my heart melt and it honestly de-stresses me.

I don’t feel like I’m living in a grody shed.

Don’t get me wrong—my roommates and I are very fortunate to live in a nice apartment, which typically stays clean. But something about college apartments/houses just rub me the wrong way, and they kind of gross me out. At home, I always feel clean. I don’t feel gross about sleeping in my bed or sitting on the floor. I sprawl out everywhere in my house and never feel bad about it because it’s more than likely my mom just vacuumed and mopped the floor.

Free laundry and food.

Yes, the one we have all been waiting for. I mean, if I’m going home, of course I’m going to bring my laundry: why wouldn’t I? And free meals? Anything beats not having to cook for yourself! My mom is a fantastic cook and makes the most creative, healthy meals. I always know I’m going to be eating well when I go home!

No roommates.

I love my roommates, and we get along very well. But there’s just something about going home and living the way you want to live (or how your parents want you to live). Something about it is just comfortable and cozy. My roommates at home are just my parents, ever since my siblings moved out, and they are the best roommates (sometimes).

Being at college is amazing, but sometimes there’s simply nothing better than kicking back and relaxing in your home-sweet-home.
