What Love Taught Me About Being Single on Valentine’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

As a self-proclaimed V-Day pundit, I have concluded that there are two kinds of single people on V-Day. There’s either the hateful V-Day terminator, or the hopelessly romantic aficionado. As for myself, well… you see, I’m the later of the two.

Count your blessings. Love is love. It is as much about romance it is about love in the general sense.

Appreciate love for what it is; appreciate love from its deepest roots and up. We are who we are now because of love, or the lack thereof. Reminisce about your childhood and the most important moments of your life— could you have done it without love? Me for one, I know for certain that I would not be where I am now without love and support from my friends and family, love for myself, or the love for life itself. Take the opportunity to express gratitude to those who have shown you the power of love in your life.

Feeling the presence of love is better than being in love.

Immerse yourself in love— love is everywhere. Sure, it might not be love of your own, but it is about freaking time we start being happy for other people. Learn to embrace and to love the idea of love, whether or not it is of your own. Make someone else’s love a part of your love (I promise it’s not as creepy as it sounds) and you will find yourself surrounded by more love than you have ever before.

Love is not always about receiving. It’s also about giving.

(*cough cough* Russell Wilson, Represent)

Now that you’ve surrounded yourself with love, add some more love to the world. Absorb the love you have received and go on and empower others with it. Instead of having unrealistic romantic comedies touch your soul, why not touch the souls of others with the infinite power you have? Have a conversation with a stranger (in a not creepy way), buy a homeless person a bus ticket, forgive someone, commit a random act of kindness… I promise, you will feel the power of love in a way you have never before.

The most empowering kind of love comes from within yourself.

I don’t mean that in the “love yourself, accept your flaws” kind of way; but you already know that. What I mean, is that you should take the time to understand yourself, to feel your emotions and to learn new things about yourself. Go do something you would never do: conquer a fear, confront an insecurity, and by all means do a hot wing challenge if that’s what your into. My point is, enjoy your own company. Don’t rely on others— be your own source of happiness.

Darkness is simply the absence of light. Similarly, solitary is simply the absence of love. Take a look around, can you genuinely say that you can’t see the presence of love? Can you honestly say that you are all alone and that you have no one to love? Our lives are filled with love, and arguably a better kind of love than those in cheesy Hallmark movies.
