Let’s face it: it’s hard being a broke college girl who loves fashion. I constantly find myself yearning for the next new thing, and then I think about the pit in my wallet. This spring, invest in one key item like the pair of floral printed shorts below. These shorts are a great investment because they will go with everything from your denim button down, to your look-at-me bustier. When you are shopping on a budget, don’t get the trendy or “I’ve got 15 of these” items. Look for standout pieces that you can re-wear and for more than one occasion. Below are five different ways to wear one pair of floral printed shorts.

For those of you lucky enough traveling #SB12, these shorts are a must-have on the beach. These shorts definitely need to be mixed with a funky bandeau and 70s-bohemian accessories. Basically, this look belongs on any hipster going to Coachella.

Enjoy the beautiful weather in Madison on the Memorial Union Terrace, but don’t forget the SPF. I love this casual-yet-chic look that is not too daring, but still screams “cool fashionista.”

I love this bright blazer, which I could totally see Blake Lively or Rachel Bilson rocking. This look is for girls who are confidant and the life of the party. The structured shoe and Rihanna-inspired bustier juxtapose the sweet look of the floral print and bright colors making it a perfect going out look.

Fashion magazines are constantly saying to try “Bold Mixed Prints” and I would like to say, “Easier said than done.” It can be very tricky finding the line between fashion forward and sorry-not-sorry-you-look-like-a-clown. Stripes and floral prints are an easy mix – if you get the right color. Don’t go full on matchy-matchy, but find a happy medium with a color that is just a little off. Stay pretty neutral or solid with the accessories.

When worse comes to worst, and you “have nothing to wear,” be inspired by the fashion blog Man Repeller, and break all the rules. Love your leather vest, but have no reason to wear it? Boom. Statement pieces like these floral shorts are the perfect items to try out bold pieces with. A daring look like this doesn’t need any rules, just a courageous, cool girl wearing it!
