Why writing is my most beneficial – and fun – hobby

Since I was young, my mom (a journalist) always told me to take journalism classes whenever I had the chance. On top of this, she corrected my grammar at every opportunity, which I am very grateful for today. Both of these things rubbed off on me – my grammar is decent and I did end up taking journalism in high school; however, I ended up developing an underlying love for writing as I grew up.

I realized my love for writing in high school when I decided to start writing for our school’s magazine; being part of that team just made writing such a fun part of my day. I eventually realized that diversifying my writing helped me become a more effective writer in my other classes. AP Lang essays, for example, were never something I looked forward to writing, but at least I knew how to make my writing flow well and sound interesting (for an AP Lang essay). I also loved the collaborative aspect that I got to experience through everyone’s shared love for creating something through writing. Maybe I just got lucky, but I learned to associate joy and excitement with writing from a younger age.

When I got to college, I knew I wanted to find something that would push me to continue developing this skill. Her Campus has been a great outlet, and being able to write for fun on the side of my political science essays has been like therapy. Whether it is venting about something that has been on my mind, talking about events from my personal life, or just sharing things that interest me in that moment, I truly appreciate being able to get my thoughts out in a fun way. Writing is such a cool hobby because I get to practice an important life skill in a relaxed and engaging manner. It has a positive impact on my mental state when I have to write an essay or a paper for a class; I know I will have to write a lot in the future because of my major, so I am grateful that I have developed a positive outlook on it.

If you want to practice something that will become an important skill, the best way to do so is to find a way to incorporate writing into your life. From daily journaling to producing pages of creative writing, writing is such a fun and fresh hobby to have.
