Livin LArgentina has been feeding you with real-life experiences from a UW-Madison student’s trip abroad for a few weeks now. But how much do we know about Argentina’s geography? It’s time for a little lesson!

Location:
Argentina lies in southern South America, bordering the South Atlantic Ocean, nestled between Chile and Uruguay.
 
Area:
The country is 2,780,400 square kilometers, which is slightly less than three-tenths the size of the United States.
 
Land boundaries:
Argentina borders Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.
 
Climate:
The country is mostly temperate, but arid in southeast and subantarctic in southwest.
 
Terrain:
The Argentina terrain consists of the rich plains of the Pampas in northern half, the flat to rolling plateau of Patagonia in south and the rocky Andes along western border.
 
Natural resources:
Argentina is blessed with many different natural resources, including the fertile plains of the pampas, lead, zinc, tin, copper, iron ore, manganese, petroleum and uranium.
 
Other facts:

• Argentina is the second largest country, after Brazil, in South America.
• It has a convenient location between the South Pacific and South Atlantic oceans
• Tropical climates thrive in the north, while a tundra is in the south.
• The tallest mountain and the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere are both in Argentina: Cerro Aconcagua and Laguna del Carbon respectively.

 
It’s a long way from good ol’ Madison! A girl can dream, right?
