What is Emmie Magazine?
Emmie Magazine is UW-Madison’s student-run music magazine. We have a bi-annual print issue that publishes the best of what Madison has to offer, as well as a constantly updated website (emmiemagazine.com). Emmie has been around for awhile now (since about 1996) and we pride ourselves on having fresh content and reporting on what’s up in the music world.

How did you get started with Emmie?
I got started with Emmie at the very beginning of my freshman year when a previous editor-in-chief, Bob Marshall, came up to me during a promo event for Emmie at the union. He tossed me a magazine and was like, “Hey write for Emmie.” I was hooked. I knew I wanted to write, and I love music, so it was a natural fit.

What are some of your favorite parts of this position?
There’s a lot of great things about being EIC for Emmie Magazine. Not only do I get to hangout with some of the coolest kids on campus once a week and geek out about music over some dranks on off-hours, but we produce quality music journalism and are a rare outlet for students to really just say what they really mean. If an album is just horrible, say it.

Who are some of your favorite local artists?
Some of my favorite local artists are Zola Jesus and Icarus Himself. There’s a lot of great music in Madison right now.

Who are some of your all-time favorite artists?
In terms of all-time favorite bands, I love anything Jack White or Kim Deal do, so there’s The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Breeders and The Pixies. But I also like Dinosaur Jr., The Beastie Boys, Jigga Man, and Weezer back when they weren’t heinously bad.
