I’m So Lucky to Have a Friend Like You

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

It was Mifflin. I woke up at 8 p.m., exhausted from all the day drinking. You weren’t next to me, and I wasn’t even sure where I was myself; so I called you. “Hi, I don’t know whose phone this is, but I found it in a puddle by Witte if you want to pick it up,” the person on the phone said. Mission: find my best friend. That’s what friends are for, right?

Not many people are as funny as you; not many people are as fun to be around as you; not many people are as good of an influence as you. You’re hilarious, trustworthy and gorgeous person; I’m so lucky to have a friend like you.

I’ve had so many fair-weather friends, but they’ve made it so much easier to recognize a true friend like you. We don’t have to drink to hang out, although we do have our story list of questionable shenanigans. We don’t have to see each other every day, although we do prefer to when we can. We don’t have to impress each other, although we unintentionally do all the time. We push and support each other, and I love that being friends with you has helped me become more successful.

You are so freaking fun to be around.

I hate friends who you can only get an arms’ length close to, even if you’ve known them for years. But, I love those who keep you up laughing to 2007 breakup songs until 4 a.m. You’re just that; you’re the type of person who could make going to the DMV exciting. Also, I never need to worry about you gossiping behind my back because we don’t even gossip when we hang out. We laugh at the stupidest stuff, imagine up the craziest “what if this happened” scenarios, and bond over the most WTF stories from our pasts. I could watch our hilarious Snapchat videos forever. I really could, because there are probably a million.

You are like a mom to me.

If I need a place to crash, you’ll open your couch to me. If I need advice about guys, you’ll tell it like it is and make fun of his new girlfriend with me. If you need an uber after getting kicked out of the club, I’ll scrape you off the alley cement and make sure you get home safe any day. Great friends care about each other’s well-being, and I love that you have such a big heart. I hate almost every guy you’ve dated because you deserve nothing less than the best. Some of them were pretty good, but I can’t wait until you get lucky finding someone just as awesome as you are!

You are a great influence on me.

Yes, we make dumb decisions sometimes; yes, we scurry in late to work sometimes; and yes, we leave our tab open at the bar sometimes; but we make sure our priorities and goals are in check. You make me want to go to my classes, get a great internship, and become the fancy mom who goes to brunch on Sundays after yoga class. I love how you have your life together; you don’t influence me to make bad decisions consistently. We don’t go out drinking every night of the week; instead, we go study in the library to study and we’re star employees at our job. I like how you have a life outside of fun and work; it makes me want to focus on my own. You like painting, decorating, fashion and keeping a nice home. Your fun little self-successes make me want to focus on my own interests.

The first day we met, you gave me your ID so I could go to bars with you. We both knew we’d be best friends since then, and I love that we basically acted like we already knew each other for years since day one. Life has been so much fun with a best friend like you by my side; I’m so damn lucky.
