FROM FAIRYTALES TO FINALS WEEK: WHY DISNEY STILL HITS

Sometimes, we just need a little magic to get through life!

There’s something almost ironic about how, in the middle of stress-filled college life, packed schedules, looming deadlines and the chaos of finals week, we keep the hope of some miracle or magic to fix everything, as if a fairy godmother would wave her magic wand and fill our transcripts with a 4.0!  That’s where our love for Disney seeps in. Whether it’s rewatching childhood favorites, blasting nostalgic soundtracks or planning that one magical park trip, Disney somehow still hits. But why?

Part of it is simple: Disney is a comfort. College can feel like a constant push toward the future—careers, internships, grad school and everything in between. It’s a time defined by uncertainty and pressure. Disney, on the other hand, takes us back to a time when things felt a little more certain. When the biggest problem was whether the Beast would turn human again or if Simba would reclaim Pride Rock. That familiarity is grounding. It reminds us of who we were before everything got so complicated.

But it’s not just nostalgia, it’s emotional storytelling. Disney movies aren’t just about fairy tales; they’re about growth, identity and resilience. Think about it: Moana leaves everything she knows to discover who she is. Elsa learns to embrace what makes her different. Even classics like Mulan and The Lion King deal with themes of responsibility, loss and self-discovery. These aren’t just kids’ stories; they’re reflections of what we’re going through right now. That’s why they hit differently in college. You’re not just watching the story anymore; instead, you’re relating to it.

There’s also something to be said about the Disney experience as a form of escape. In the middle of finals week, when your brain feels fried and your to-do list never ends, putting on a Disney movie or playlist feels like a reset button. For a couple of hours, you’re not thinking about exams, you’re in a world where things eventually work out. And honestly, that’s sometimes exactly what we need to keep going.

Then there’s the community aspect. Disney isn’t just something you experience alone. It shows up in group chats, themed movie nights and spontaneous sing-alongs with friends. It becomes a shared language. Everyone knows the lyrics. Everyone has a favorite character. It’s one of those rare things that can instantly connect people, no matter how different their backgrounds are.

And let’s be real, Disney has evolved with us. The newer films are more inclusive, more complex and more reflective of real-world struggles. They don’t just tell us “happily ever after” is guaranteed; they show us that getting there takes courage, failure and growth. That shift makes Disney feel less like an escape from reality and more like a guide through it.

Maybe it’s a little unexpected that Disney still holds such a strong place in our lives. But when you really think about it, it makes perfect sense. In a world that constantly demands more from us, Disney gives us something back: comfort, perspective and just enough magic to remind us that we’re going to be okay.

And honestly? Just “let it go” and enjoy the magic while it lasts!

Hey! I'm Shubhi, a freshman at UW Madison planning on double majoring in Economics and Mathematics. I was born in Edison,NJ but have lived in India for as long as I can remember.
When I'm not figuring out my next read, you'll find me humming a Bollywood song , trying out new cuisines and googling dad jokes :). While a little adventure and drama is always welcome, I just need a cup of tea and a classic Bollywood movie to unwind.
As Anne Frank said, "Paper is more patient than people"- this justifies how writing gives me peace, makes me embrace my creativity and helps me create a story. I am super excited to start my journey at Her Campus, and hope you all are as patient as the paper I write on!
