From Jumping Around at a Badger game to carefully balancing a tray stacked with food from Gordon’s, freshmen encounter new experiences everyday. While all expect us to fail at virtually everything, sometimes, just sometimes, we succeed. Through trials and tribulations we learn and someday we won’t be the awkward freshman looking at our iPhone map spinning in circles. But until then here are a couple of my freshman firsts. Hopefully they comfort all my fellow badger ladies as we embark on our second month of firsts.

  1. Dorm Life

Living in dorms comes with new people, unusual smells, no parents, and my least favorite, lofted beds. I’d like to focus on the cool looking, yet highly dysfunctional beds. Less than 24 hours after arriving I hopped up in my newly lofted bed and just sat there cooling down from the 98-degree move-in day. I heard a knock and a cute boy was in my room introducing himself. Way too excited, and barely thinking, I slid on my stomach and dangled my feet in attempt to touch the chair. As I thought my feet had reached the chair I let go of the bed, but instead my legs scraped down the chair clumsily and I landed belly down on the tile floor. Let’s just say it was too awkward for this badger boy to laugh and he left without even telling me his name. Tip: Invest in a step- ladder to avoid any circumstance similar to mine.

  1. Badger Game

Waking up at 7:30 A.M. to pregame is a hopefully a first for every freshman this year. As the floor blasted “Wake Me Up,” by Avicii, I was excited to embrace my first game day. I took the tags off my new tank, threw on my jean shorts, and attempted to tame the hair while fighting the heat seeping into my room as the sun rose. My roommate and I dashed out the door and hit Langdon.  Thus far, the morning had been a success. Around noon we were ready to go into the game, we (meaning me and about 46 other freshman, proving the ‘freshman pack’ stereotype true), walked in the sweltering heat to Camp Randall. The pregame got the best of me and upon scanning my ticket I turned right around and walked back to my sweet lofted bed in Sellery to take a nap.

  1. First almost trip as to Ian’s

It was 2 A.M. and I was in my room, determined to stay in, but when food came into the picture I was ready to go. I traded in my yoga pants for jeans and started walking to Ian’s. Me and my three friends were excited to have a nice slice of macaroni pizza when behind us we noticed a man who looked identical to the rapper 2 Chainz, and part of me still believes it was him. My friend thought it would be a good idea to tell him that he looked like 2 Chainz… and let’s just say twin 2 Chainz and his friends were not happy and proceeded to back my friend into a corner angrily. At this very moment I ran… instinctively towards Ian’s but stopped and realized that my friend may die. So I stood from a distance and watched soda get poured on him while getting screamed at. Thankfully this is all that happened to him, but sadly there was no Ian’s pizza that night. Maybe 2 Chainz twin should’ve just rapped “I’m Different” to get the point across and then maybe I would’ve enjoyed some pizza.

With every first there is a story, no matter how embarrassing or how hysterical, colligates stick together. We keep our heads up high because we have badger pride!
