The Do’s and Don’t’s of Hair Dying

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Hair dye is much cheaper at Walgreens.  Every girl has realized this at some point in their life.  You could spend $80 at a saloon, or buy a box and do it yourself for $10, the choice is simple.  However, before you attempt this money saving adventure, here are a few things you should know…

1.    DO select a color that is somewhat close to your natural color.  Don’t attempt to dye your glossy black locks platinum blonde because you’re going to need a lot more than a $10 box for that! When you pick a dye that is in the range of your natural hair color, there is a smaller chance of things going wrong.

2.    DON’T attempt to dye your hair if you have dyed it recently.  Recently dyed hair is more damaged that normal hair. Give your hair a few months to recover from the last dye before you add a second one.

3.    DO have a friend to help you out.  Home hair dying kits come with a bottle to fill with dye and distribute all over your head.  This is nearly impossible to do yourself.  Attempting to do it solo will most likely result in a huge patch on your crown that’s a completely different color because you couldn’t reach it.  Having a friend help you out will insure that your hair is consistent, not streaky!

4.    DON’T wash your hair until the time period is up.  In addition, don’t leave the dye on any longer than recommended.  Taking it off soon could cause the dye to not change your color as much as you wanted and leaving it on too long could result in very damaged hair.

5.    DO read the directions thoroughly.  You don’t want to get half way through the dying process and realize you’ve been doing it wrong.  Dying your hair is scary enough without making mistakes!  Make sure you know exactly what you’re doing and how long you should be doing it before you even start.

6.    DON’T be shy to show off your new hair.  If you’ve followed all these steps, chances are you look great!  So buy a new outfit, grab some friends, and go show the town the new you!
