The Crazy Cold Weather in Madison

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Hey everyone! Welcome back to Madison, or should I say, welcome back to the frozen tundra?!  Obviously global warming doesn’t seem to be a problem in Wisconsin.

Whenever the temperature is below 32 degrees, the weather is considered to be below freezing.  I’ve made jokes about how sometimes the cold feels like negative temperatures, but never in my life did I actually expect to experience weather below zero degrees.

When I arrived back in Madison from break, it was around negative eight degrees plus it felt even colder due to wind chill (we get so much here on the isthmus), and I thought I might turn into a block of ice.

But the cold weather doesn’t stop us Badgers. Nope, we still go out. We still walk to class. We suck it up and brave the cold.

Layering is essential when it’s freezing outside. When I go out with a few layers and my winter jacket, I manage to get myself to class while repeating, “This isn’t real” over in my head. Maybe if I convince myself I’m not actually walking in frozen weather my body will stay warmer.

Then there’s the ice on the sidewalks. I pray I don’t trip and fall in front of everyone like J.Law at the Oscars.

Once I’ve finally made it to the building that my class is being held in, I suddenly get so overheated from the quick change from cold to warm, and I try to pretend I’m not sweating in all of my layers by the time I get into my seat.

When I look at the weather app on my phone and see that the temperature is in double digits, I let out a breath of relief. Temperatures over 20 degrees don’t seem that bad after experiencing temperature in negative numbers!

We still have a while to deal with the cold, but that doesn’t stop me from praying to the weather gods that the warmth of spring will come ASAP! Stay warm, Badgers!
