Campus Celebrity: Lizzie Hoff

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

College is a time when people have a lot on their plates and juggling school, work, clubs, and a social life may leave little time for volunteer work and getting involved in the community.  And then there’s Lizzie Hoff: a Junior who balances everything and still has time to be involved on campus and in the community.  Not only is she double majoring in Psychology and Sociology, she is also a member of Alpha Xi Delta, Autism Speaks U, the Vice President of Badgers Empowering Women, a Research Assistant at The Infant Learning Lab, a volunteer at the American Family Children’s Hospital, and a SPILL supporter.  As a member of Alpha Xi Delta, she is the housing chairperson and the chairperson for the sorority’s philanthropy, Autism Speaks.

What made you decide to get involved with Autism Speaks?

I did a lot of work with individuals with disabilities in high school and college. It has been extremely rewarding and life-changing. I have learned so much from those I have worked with. I could never repay them enough for everything they have given me, but supporting Autism Speaks is a great way to do some good.

How are you involved with Autism Speaks?

I am the Autism Speaks Chairperson for Alpha Xi Delta. I work with members of our chapter to run fundraisers benefiting Autism Speaks. In addition to this, we strive to create greater awareness on campus. Keeping everyone informed is imperative to our work. I am also an Alpha Xi Delta representative for Autism Speaks U. We often work together to support Autism Speaks through fundraisers and awareness campaigns. For example, during April, which is Autism Awareness Month, we put up signs and chalked autism facts on Bascom.

What is the most rewarding part of working with Autism Speaks?

Being a part of a large organization that cares so deeply about having a positive impact on the lives of those affected by autism is truly inspiring. The money we raise supports families that need help paying for therapeutic services, research on autism, and promotes awareness. Supporting Autism Speaks is constantly inspiring.

How can others get involved? They can join Autism Speak U! If they don’t have time to take on a club, they can be on the lookout for fundraising events put on by Alpha Xi Delta and/or Autism Speaks U. To learn more about autism and Autism Speaks, visit the Autism Speaks website!

Lizzie’s involvement with Autism Speaks and other orgs on campus is truly an inspiration to those around her and other students.  With such strong dedication to helping others, we know that Lizzie will go far and will continue being an inspiration to others through her service.
