8 Must-Have Jackets for Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Madison’s weather isn’t considered unpredictable for no reason; and every woman must have a selection of jackets to stay warm — and stylish — in the notorious Wisconsin weather. Invest in one of these outwear essentials this fall and rock it out when you’re hitting up the farmer’s market on a chilly fall Saturday morning.

1. Quilted Jacket

This jacket from Free People is perfect for a chilly morning walk to class or for a nice lunch with friends on the weekend. Layer it with a loose sweater, a pair of jeans and a pair of boots, and you’re ready for fall! The jacket comes in plenty of colors, from neutral black to fun teal — there’s a color for anyone.

2. Bomber Jacket

This is the chicest way to stay warm during a night out. You can either opt for a plainer option (army green is a good color), or venture out for a patterned jacket (as pictured). In any case, these jackets can add to any look, casual or dressy.

3. Jean Jacket

If you’re looking for a good jacket to wear on a sixty-degree day, denim is the answer. Running out the door to get to class? Throwing on a jean jacket can easily mix some vintage and retro vibe into your outfit. This jean jacket in particular includes a faux fur collar and lining, which adds an extra layer of warmth — it’s perfect for those cold mornings.

4. Trench Coat

A trench coat is the classiest way to stay dry in the rain! You never know when you will walk out of class to a downpour in Madison, but when you do, do it in the most fashionable way possible. This trench coat from Target is not only inexpensive and stylish, it also comes with an adorable belt.

5. Fluffy Jacket

This jacket is not only warm from the inside but also snuggly on the outside, too. Throw it over a tee and a pair of jeans to turn an ordinary outfit into a stylish and trendy one.

6. (Faux) Fur Vest

Although this isn’t exactly a jacket or coat, this long vest screams autumn. Layer this vest with a long-sleeve shirt and a pair of booties, and you’ve met your definite need for the cooler degrees. Now, go take a nice stroll around the farmer’s market.

7. Moto-Style Jacket

Everyone needs a moto-style jacket. It doesn’t matter if you choose a leather, suede or velvet one, you’ll look like a bada** in any way. You get extra points, too, if you purchase a red one to show off your Badger spirit. This one by Blank NYC is a good option. #PeaceLoveBucky

8. Long Fuzzy Coat

Debatably just a longer version of #5. I am still obsessed with this fuzzy coat from Topshop. It’s like you’re being hugged by a teddy bear — who wouldn’t want that?!

If you go to a university where cold, unpredictable weather is inevitable, it’s important to be fully stocked and prepared for whatever the forecast throws at you. Whether it’s raining and 60 degrees or sunny with wind chills, these jackets have you covered — literally.
