7 Cute Date Ideas for the Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Close your eyes, and imagine a Saturday afternoon during the fall in Madison. There isn’t a football game, and you are with your friends or S/O. Where are you? What are you doing? Are you having fun?

If “I don’t know” was your answer to any of the three questions, check out this list of cute, entertaining date ideas:

1. Paddle Boarding on Lake Mendota

Take advantage of the lake before it turns into ice! Lake Mendota is always a good place to spend a weekend afternoon way from responsibilities — try taking a dip or paddle-boarding (which, if you’re clumsy like me, will result in taking a dip anyway). Water equipment is available for rent on an hourly basis, so you head to Memorial Union to reserve yours!

2. Apple Picking at Door Creek Orchards

Apple picking is the ultimate fall activity, so grab a few of your friends — or your significant other — and head over to Door Creek Orchards! It’s only about a 15-minute drive from campus, and it’s got a wide selection of apples, pears and grapes. Word of advice: don’t hesitate to buy its cider. You’ll thank me later.

3. Hiking at Devil’s Lake State Park

We know you’re lying if you say you don’t like unwinding with a scenic walk in the fall air. Devil’s Lake has both rigorous, rocky paths and easy, flatter trails, so it can make for a cute and fun experience for anyone. Plus, its picturesque scenery makes for a great Insta pic. Grab a friend and a comfortable pair of shoes, and you’re good to go.

4. Dane County Farmers’ Market

Every UW–Madison student has been to the Farmers’ Market at least once, right? But that doesn’t take away from how cute and interesting all of the little food stands and vendors are! Whether you’re looking for yummy food, fresh plants or handmade jewelry, the Farmers’ Market got it all. Go for Stella’s Spicy Cheesy Bread, and stay for the flowers. Can’t make it to the market this Saturday? Don’t worry— the market is around the Capitol every Saturday from April to November.

5. Madison Museum of Contemporary Art

If you’re not in the mood to do something sporty or outdoorsy, check out the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art on State Street. It’s free and it’s always got multiple exhibits going on! And if you’re hungry, head to its in-house rooftop restaurant, Fresco. It overlooks all of State Street and the Capitol, which makes for a great spot for pictures.

6. Picnic at Picnic Point

Tucked away in an peninsula just past the UW Hospital, Picnic Point overlooks Lake Mendota and makes for a scenie venue for bonfires. With a bus stop right at its entrance, this hiking area is easily accessible to students and people of the Madison area. Although it’s fun and exciting to spend time in the downtown area, it’s nice to know that this natural reserve is only a short bus ride away.

7. “Taste of Wisconsin” Lunch Tour

You mean I can eat as much as possible? I’m in. This tour takes its visitors on a walking tour and stops at six different eateries on and around the Capitol Square. You’ve got pastries, Korean food, cheese, chocolate and Wisconsin ice cream — just to name a few. Although the tour is a little pricey, it definitely makes for an entertaining and delicious experience for Madisonians.

From beautiful hiking trails to unique art exhibits, Madison’s always got your back. With these options, there’s no excuse to sleep in super late and waste your days away. Make sure you take advantage of these fun date ideas, whether it’s with your significant other or with a group of friends!
