6 Must-See Korean Dramas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

I’ve been hooked on Korean drama since I was 12 years old. Korean drama always finds a way to pull on my heartstrings  — it makes me crave more and more of them. Considering the handsome actors, the storylines and the amazing soundtracks, there is no reason you shouldn’t be hooked too. Let me tell you, once you start, you will never want to stop. It was so hard to come up with this list because I have watched so many great dramas, but here are my top six. I have fallen in love with all of them, and you will too!

1. Scarlet Heart Ryeo

This historical romance drama stars Lee Joon Ki and Lee Ji Eun (aka. IU). Hae Soo (IU) plays a 21st-century woman who is transported back to the Goryeo Dynasty where she falls in love with the Fourth Prince Wang So (Lee Joon Ki). Hae Soo finds herself caught between a dilemma when the princes fight over the throne.

This drama is beautiful and passionate. Plus, the cast and soundtrack are amazing. I watched this drama twice, and I cried throughout the entire show both times.

2. Boys Over Flower

This was the second Korean drama I’ve ever watched. It is mega-hit and has fans worldwide. This drama is about Jang Di, the daughter of a dry cleaner. She has a swimming scholarship to Shin Hwa but was bullied by the entire school and F4. As time goes on, she’s able to capture the hearts of her school and F4.

3.  City Hunter

This is an action-packed drama with some romance and thrill. Lee Yoon Sung was raised by his father’s friend for the sole purpose of revenging the men responsible for his father’s death. During his quest for vengeance, he enacts justice and falls in love with an innocent girl.

4. Goblin: The Lonely and Great God

This drama pulled on my heartstrings. I fell in love with this drama and its cast and soundtrack. This is a supernatural drama that proves love can find its way past anything, including death. Kim Shin is a fabled “goblin” who wants to ends his life by marrying a human bride; but things get complicated when he starts to fall for her. He then tries to find a reason to stay alive. This is a great drama to start with if you are just getting into Korean dramas.

5. A Man Called God

This was the drama that made me obsessed with Korean drama. This action drama is about billionaire and secret agent Choi Kang Ta. He sets out to avenge his parent’s death but learns about love and justice along the way. With themes of betrayal and love, this is one of the best dramas I have watched.

6. My Love From Another Star

This drama has a unique plot and is about love, destiny and fate. It’s about an alien from another planet who has been living in Korea for 400 years. He has a cynical view of humans but falls in love with a top Hallyu star. The chemistry between the lead actors is amazing — you can feel the powerful, intense emotion between them.

You can find these dramas on Dramafever, Viki and Netflix.  These dramas are amazing and, hopefully, you will love them as much as I do. Maybe, you will even become a Korean addict like me — oops!
