The inevitable has happened. Our moms are on Instagram. While some of us are cringing at the idea of our mothers using hashtag #selfiesunday, this could be a great opportunity to bond with mom.
You can help her find the perfect lighting and subject for her #firstpost (coffee, brunch and the Sunday paper is very “hip mom”), show her the best filters and even pick out an appropriate username. Still, all those tips mean nothing if she doesn’t follow any great accounts. Here’s a simple list for moms of all types to help start her IG career right.
Interior designer and HGTV celebrity Joanna Gaines is well known for her rustic-chic style on the ever-entertaining Fixer Upper. If you know anything about Mrs. Gaines, it’s that she has great taste that’s likely to inspire your mom to redecorate the house in the best of ways. Joanna balances photos from her renovation projects with picture with her adorably goofy hubby Chip, her “kiddos” and all around mom-friendly content.

Sports Center’s IG is an obvious staple for any sport-lover, so adding it to your mom’s “following” list is a no-brainer. She can stay updated on trending news in the world of sports and may even begin to put some faces to the names she hears on sports radio all too often (for the mothers that prefer AM sports radio to TV, *ahem* *hi, mom*).
There’s nothing quite like a great fashion Instagram account, and @WhoWhatWear has great, envy-worthy posts for the fashionista in EVERY mom. Your mother will be inspired by the account’s classy, sophisticated style. Get ready for some very stylish birthday presents, ladies.
This delicious account is run by two food bloggers and will definitely get your mom’s mouth watering. They post thousands of recipes on their website, but their Insta posts are inspiring in themselves. There’s nothing quite like beautiful photos of food to get a girl’s cravings going. You and your mom could even try a recipe out together sometime.
While it is true that your mom may not totally “get” hashtags right away (seriously, I don’t think I even know how to use them right) helping her find accounts to follow based on her hobbies and even some things you both enjoy could be a great opportunity to bond.
So, take the time to build the perfect account for her. Before you know it, you’ll be getting tagged in a #tbt post from when you were a baby and she was looking smoking hot in light wash jeans.
