5 Eco-Friendly and Trendy Fashion Recs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Let’s be honest, keeping up with the latest fashion trends can be head spinning. Finding pieces that are in style can be hard, especially when on a budget. As college students I get it, finding fits for the cheapest prices is what we all look for. Oftentimes, we turn to fast fashion for those pieces. I mean who wouldn’t want five shirts for under $30? Now while the price is nice, the impact on the environment isn’t. Fast fashion finds the cheapest and quickest ways to produce goods regardless of the impact. Unfortunately it has led to large carbon emissions, water consumption and plastic in our oceans. Fashion is one of the largest industries and these impacts will only continue to grow. So, then what should we do? Well, the answer is quite simple. Switch to sustainable shopping! Learning how to shop sustainably not only does a good deed for the environment, but can help you save money. To help you get started, here are some of my favorite affordable brands!

Everlane

Everlane has a great range of items that are both stylish and comfortable. What I love about the brand is the versatility; pieces can be dressed up or down for practically any occasion. Having purchased some of their tank tops, I couldn’t be happier with the style and quality. I’ve worn them out and even with sweatpants and a messy bun. They have a range of staples that everyone needs in their closet. Their chic and simple collections allow for creativity when creating outfits – perfect for any style.

For Days

If you are looking for streetwear basics this is the place to go. Personally having some of their items in my closet, I wear them all the time. The quality is unmatched and they will last through the wear and tear of everyday life. They also have a swap program where you can send them your old clothes and receive credit or swap For Days items for discounts, easy on the environment and your wallet.

Girlfriend Collective

Finding quality workout clothes can oftentimes be difficult, but Girlfriend Collective has got your back. Not only do they make strides to be more sustainable, but they promote body positivity through their all inclusive sizes. The pieces are not only practical, but cute and comfortable as well, perfect for any type of activity.  As a huge yogi, I am always looking for a great pair of leggings that won’t slide around and Girlfriend Collective is my new go-to.

Madewell

Madewell has a large range of clothing options, but their denim is where they shine through. For women it can be a struggle to find the perfect pair of jeans. Within their denim collection they have a selection of styles, so whatever your preference, you’ll find something for your perfect curves. I am a huge wearer of flare jeans and theirs are so comfortable and durable, oh and of course go with practically any aesthetic.

Buy second hand

Going to your local thrift store or second hand store is ultimately the best way to shop sustainably. You can find almost any kind of clothing and even get some vintage items. It’s a great way to add pieces you wouldn’t normally pick, to your everyday wear. Personally, I have found some great button-up Hawaiian shirts that I wouldn’t normally wear, but now love too.

More brands you’ll love: Love Street Apparel, Ecovibe, Organic Basics, Kotn and Boyish Jeans.

Making small decisions like choosing to shop sustainable makes a big impact on the planet. One person can absolutely make a difference. Choosing to purchase from brands that make sustainable choices allows them to widen their impact and continue to make change. Shopping sustainable allows you to make conscious purchasing decisions, as well. It allows you to opt for quality over quantity and find pieces that are versatile and last through life. Taking that extra step to find sustainability not only in fashion, but everyday life, may be tedious but ensures that mother nature will be a bit more beautiful every day.
