20 Reasons Why High School Seniors Should Pick UW-Madison

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

It’s that time of the year again, for high school seniors to pick the school they intend on spending the next four years of their life at. We all remember the stress and excitement that came along with that decision, but it wasn’t an easy one.  It’s no secret to those of us who already go here that we picked the best option. UW has everything you could possibly hope for in a school, unless your hope is for summer year round.

1. It’s a really big school, so you can avoid almost anyone you want to.  But you can also make it small by finding your favorite hang out spots and a good group of friends.  Hint, hint: picnic point.

2. Since it’s such a large campus you will definitely hit your 10,000 steps a day goal.

3. And thanks to good ol’ Bascom, the freshman 15 is not a thing.

4. Plus, enrolling here lands you a “free” gym membership.

5. There’s always something to do in Madison.  Find a new restaurant, hang out on State, you could take a walk and find something you haven’t seen before.

6. We have 49 libraries, so you can always find somewhere to get your homework done.

7. We’ve got so many majors that you are bound to find a good fit and work towards your dream job.

8. Since Madison is a city, and not just a college campus, there are more than just students around.  Meaning you see dogs everywhere!

9. Choosing what kind of environment you want to live in, whether you are destined to live in a city or on a lake, is a nice perk of our residence halls.

10. Speaking of neighborhoods, the iconic Lakeshore versus Southeast Battle on Bascom is a blast. 11. The sunsets reflecting off of the lake are some of the most breathtaking views you will ever see.

12. You can brag to your Minnesota friends that Wisconsin has held Paul Bunyan’s Axe for the last 12 years.

13. Babcock Ice Cream.  No other school’s ice cream can compare.  Plus, you can get a scoop until midnight and who wouldn’t want that?!

14. No other school celebrates Halloween better than Madison’s Freakfest.

15. The state capitol is just a few blocks from campus which makes for some great Instagram posts at sunset. 16. Speaking of the capitol, the farmers market is glorious.

17. There is also a zoo not far from campus, which makes any afternoon more enjoyable.

18. If research is your thing, we are ranked in the top 5 universities for research. 19. If you choose Madison you will be here just in time for the Union Terrace to reopen, and who doesn’t want that?

20. Nothing beats spending your days in the student section at a Badger game. The tradition of “Jump Around” and singing of “Build Me Up Buttercup” and “Varsity” make any game better, and it is usually seen on ESPN, which makes you almost famous. Let’s be real, all of the pros of coming to the UW outweigh the pros of any other school.  UW has so much to offer that it’s hard to not fall in love with your school a little more every day.  I don’t know what it’s like to be a student at another school, but honestly I don’t want to.  So all things considered, nothing beats being a Badger.  On Wisconsin!
