Why “Gilmore Girls”: A Year in the Life Was a Disappointment

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

Where you lead, I will follow, anywhere that you tell me to. They’re back ladies! The mother daughter duo we all wanted to be a part of, the Gilmore Girls.

A Year in the Life marked the return of Lorelai and Rory as well as all of our favorite Stars Hollow residents; Luke, Miss Patti, Emily, Taylor, Kirk, and more. The four episodes were released on November 25th, just in time for a binge watching session after Thanksgiving and Black Friday festivities came to an end.

Gilmore fans have been eagerly awaiting the return for months, ever since the announcement was made that the revival was happening.

Like many, I binge watched the four episodes in a matter of hours. I had such high expectations for my girls but I have to say, as much as I loved seeing the gang back together, I was disappointed in the show overall. Here’s why.

***PROCEED WITH CAUTION-SPOILER ALERTS AHEAD***

1. Rory and Logan

Yes, I’m all for some Rory and Logan love but not in this situation. Logan was engaged to another woman when he and Rory were together. Cheating is not something that the Rory we know and love would have done. Ok, so she did with Dean but that’s beside the point. It still made me angry.

2. Rory and Jess

I was totally team Jess and when he returned and motivated Rory to write her book, my heart was leaping for joy. Then nothing happened. And there was definitely chemistry between the two but apparently I was wrong. I just really wanted them to be together.

3. Luke and Lorelai’s wedding

Finally, Luke and Lorelai are getting married. After so long, dreams are coming true. They were going to have a sweet town wedding and everybody was going to be together, but that didn’t happen. Instead, it was just Lorelai, Luke, and Rory in the middle of Stars Hollow at night with nobody there. Don’t get me wrong, it was a beautiful location and it was decorated so wonderfully but not even Jess and Emily were there. It just didn’t seem like a realistic situation.

4. Rory’s career

When the show ended back in 2007, Rory had graduated college and was off to start a career on Obama’s first campaign. She had an exciting future ahead of her.  She had a few big stories but now, she has no idea what she’s doing. She’s all over the place; she falls asleep when she’s interviewing someone, she freaks out about a “lucky” outfit. It’s just rather confusing. We wanted Rory to have a successful career, kicking but at the New York Times or Wall Street Journal.  Hopefully writing The Gilmore Girls will get her back on her feet and get her where she needs to be.

5. Lorelai’s relationship with Emily

So I’m not naïve enough to think that Lorelai and Emily were going to be best friends after Richard’s death but I didn’t expect them to be so hostile towards each other. Lorelai messed up at Richard’s funeral when she told that awful story but I think that Emily overreacted. It broke my heart to see them going through losing Richard alone.

6. Dean

Rory’s boyfriend for years and first love and he only gets like 5 minutes of screen time. And in those 5 minutes, all we got was a semi-awkward conversation with Rory in the store about his wife and kids.

7. Rory and Lorelai

I get it, Lorelai isn’t thrilled about her daughter writing about every moment in their lives and exposing details of Lorelai’s life that she’s not thrilled about people learning however, she still needs to be supportive of her daughter. And in the end she is but they went months without talking and that’s just not okay for them.

8. Sookie

She and Lorelai were best friends. They had a dream of starting an inn together and they did. But because she decided to go live some nature life with Jackson and the kids and ditch her responsibilities at the inn. She left Michele and Lorelai high and dry without a cook, they even hired Rachel Ray for a short period of time. But then Sookie came back months later for one episode.
