The Secret Life of a Sorority Big

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

One of the greatest relationships within a sorority is big and littles. Your little is usually a new member full of love for a sorority that they are just getting to know.

Not every relationship has to be the absolute best of friends, but rather a mentor to support them through every decision they make.

First off, being a Big is honestly one of the most expensive and time-consuming things I have ever done in my entire life.

This is not me saying if you’re on a budget you can’t ball out. Some of the most meaningful gifts in my littles’ baskets we’re handmade or personalized. Personally, balancing social relationships, schoolwork and work can be very challenging. However, sometimes you know the relationship is meant to be when it comes easily to get to know them.

Now comes the secretive part. All of this comes with careful planning and maybe just a few lies.

Usually, there is at least one week between pairing and reveal where you can write hints and notes to your future little. Even though they somehow always find out the truth, it is still fun tricking them a little bit. The hardest part, in my opinion, was trying to remember which information they told me as a friend or if they told me that as a Big. Shout out to my little and littlest for not making fun of my blatantly obvious lies.

When the day finally came to reveal myself my emotions almost couldn’t be contained.

The candle would pass back and forth in front of me and I would literally shake from nerves. However, the biggest secret is that your little/littles will teach you way more than you ever feel like you taught them. Sure, I can teach them all about the sorority, but they not only taught me how to love it all over again but also myself
