Ryan Lochte Charged at by Protesters on “Dancing with the Stars”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

It’s been almost a month since Ryan Lochte’s Olympic scandal in Rio and people are still unhappy with the gold medalist.

The Lochte scandal broke in late August when the swimmer was reportedly robbed at gunpoint with other U.S. swimmers in Rio.

As it turns out, Lochte had “exaggerated” the story and fans and sponsors weren’t happy. In a matter of days, Lochte lost his sponsorship with Speedo, Ralph Lauren, and Syneron-Candela.

The swimmer recently joined the cast of season 23 of Dancing with the Stars. The season premiered Monday September, 12th and night one was much different than anyone expected.

Lochte and his partner Cheryl Burke were waiting to get their scores from the judges when Lochte protesters charged at them.

The protesters were wearing anti-Lochte shirts as they ran across stage toward Lochte and Burke.

Security immediately arrested and escorted the attackers off set. An audience member caught the video when cameras weren’t rolling.

The video shows judge Carrie Ann Inaba saying excuse me as the attackers run toward Lochte and Burke. There is footage of Lochte and Burke dancing as Inaba is talking but you can see figures run in front of the judges table. Check out the video below.

E! News also provided additional footage of the arrest of Barzeen Soroudi and Sam Sotoodeh.

Lochte was shaken up and hurt about the situation. In an interview after the incident, Lochte said “You know, at that moment, I was really heartbroken. My heart just sunk. It felt like somebody just ripped it apart.”
