“I feel beautiful from my confidence.”
“I feel beautiful when I am not wearing any makeup.”
“I feel beautiful when I’m with my closest friends who make me laugh.”Â
On Thursday April 23, the Her Campus Winthrop team set up a table on Scholars Walk to give away free goodies and also to create a video promoting beauty. In the video, girls were asked the question, “What makes you feel the most beautiful?”
The HC Winthrop team hopes that the video will help boost confidence and self esteem. In today’s world, media has created high standards for young girls to look and act a certain way.
Because of this expectation, teen girls are pressured to be a size 0, have a thigh gap, have clear skin and also have perfect hair.
The important resolution to these impossible beauty standards is to address a core issue because many young girls find their value exclusively on their appearance.
According to the National Eating Disorders Association, 40-60% of young girls start to become concerned about their weight by the time they turn 12 years old.
Since young women are staring to realize this early on in life, the pressure of looking “perfect” starts to set into their minds and could eventually lead to many eating disorders.
Instead of comparing yourself to magazine covers and unrealistic beauty, why not celebrate your beauty? All of your imperfections is what makes you perfect. Stop thinking you have to be a size 0. Stop thinking you’re ugly because you think you’re not as beautiful as the model you see. Stop ruining your self esteem and self confidence.
Start telling yourself you’re beautiful and that you love yourself. It will make all the difference in the world.Â
