Obsession With the Shacket: Is It Worth the Hype?

The opinions expressed in this article are the writer’s own and do not reflect the views of Her Campus.
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

One of the more recent fall fashion trends is the “shacket.” A shacket can either be a shirt jacket or sherpa jacket, both of which are warm and cozy. The shacket has been an annual fall trend and a very comfortable one at that! Shackets are thinner than the average winter coat but thicker than your average shirt, hence the name shacket. I feel like shackets are fall outerwear fashion staples that everyone should have in their closet. It is the perfect layering piece, and we are all about layering during the colder seasons.

History-

Shackets date back to the 19th century when blue collar workers needed that extra layer to not only shield them from the cold windy weather, but also to protect them from spills and spots on their clothing. The military also used to use a version of the shacket in which were designed with deep pockets to store everything a soldier needed from a water jug to gun bullets.

Ways to Style-

A shacket is just a very versatile and easy styling piece. There are so many ways to dress up or dress down a shacket. Wearing a shacket with black leather pants, a cute pair of ankle boots, and a plain-colored body suit is a perfect date night outfit. Pairing it with a favorite set of mom jeans and cute long sleeve top is a great fall festival look. Dressing a shacket down with a pair of staple leggings, tank top, and trusty pair of sneakers is the ultimate fall lounge look. Layering a shacket over a sweat suit is a great lazy Sunday look. These are just a few outfit ideas that clearly show how versatile a shacket really can be.

Where to Find-

Shackets are sold everywhere from Costco to Amazon to even Walmart. Depending on the style you are looking for, the shacket is sold just about anywhere you can think of. When the trend is in style, you can be guaranteed to find one that suits your fancy. Some of my favorite places I frequent that always has a good selection of shackets includes Old Navy, TJ Maxx, Kohl’s, Amazon, and Target.

Different Styles-

There are many different styles and materials shackets are made of. Some different styles are listed:

  • Plaid
  • Corduroy
  • Sherpa
  • Denim
  • Flannel

So, the question is, are shackets worth the hype? Well that all comes down to your opinion, but the fact that it is a comfortable, universal fall must-have that has been around for many years and been used for many different things makes me feel like shackets ARE worth the hype. It is a timeless piece of clothing that will be around for many years to come and will never go out of style. Now that fall is approaching, I will most definitely be bringing out my shacket for its annual return. Shackets and the rest of the fall closet staples are just one of the many reasons fall is my favorite season of the year!
