Her Story: The Roommates That Saved Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

I am a big believer that everything does happen for a reason. I am aware that statement is cliche and overused, but from my experiences it the most accurate statement that could describe my life. More particularly my roommate situation.

From the first day of classes this year, I was aware all my plans and the idea I had for myself was going to collapse. I ended up living with a girl that I knew from my organization, and I only knew three things about this chick:

  1. She loves corgis
  2. She will tell you how much she loves corgis
  3. Oh did I mention she loves corgis?

She was nice enough to let me live with her after my roommate situation did not work out. My expectations for this relationship was polite conversation, and us walking to our events together. If you would have told me this girl was going to become my best friend, I would have thought you were lying, we just did not seem like a match made in heaven.

She ended up being everything I need in a time where I felt like I had nobody. The crazier thing, not only did my roommate become my best friend, my other random suitemate, because the little sister I have always desired.

One little sonic trip where I lost my wallet (another story for another time), ended up reuniting two women that I consider lifelong friends, and even family.

I don’t think they will even understand the impact they have made in my life, I was on the verge of dropping out of Winthrop and erasing this part of my life.

They not only made my decision worth staying. I do not want the school year to end because the best part of my junior year was coming home and having these two crazy kids by my side.

I found two women who accept every inch of me, I can be crying on the futon eating Nutella and they will join in. I have two women who have been my biggest cheerleaders all year, they have supported me for every event, every award, and my stress out ass during recruitment week.

I would have never grown as a person without Caylen Michels and Madison Derrick, I would still be the girl crying in my room, too scared to embrace the world.

So, having both of you as my roommates I first thought not much of it, and I consider it a blessing in disguise.

Even though Maddie going to Spain next semester, and won’t be living with us next year, you can bet your ass I will be calling her almost every day, sending her crazy memes, and taking a jello shot for her on my 21st Birthday.

Thank you for a year to remember.

There are not many thing I am sure off, life changes every minute, people unfortunately leave our lives in the most unexpected times, the path we thought we were taking can just collapse, and sadly some friendship are not meant to last.

However, with you two ladies, no matter where life takes us, and I will never forget or downplay the impact you on my growth as a person. I would of never rushed, I would of never started writing for Her Campus, I would of never believe in myself and thought I had the strength to actually make a difference in my life if I did not have you two supporting me all throughout the way.

So thank you for helping me learn to become free, and showing me a side of the world that I was scared I was never going to see.
