Grease: Live Was Everything And We Can’t Get Enough

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

It’s electrifying!!!

Grease: Live lit up the screen on Sunday January 31, 2016. 39 years later, Grease was brought back to life for a jawdropping performance on live TV. With an exciting new cast and special appearances by some of the old, this production had it all.

Grease: Live was shot on a 20 acre lot, sending the actors across it all to get from one set to another between takes. There were sets from other popular shows such as Pretty Little Liars, Gilmore Girls, and Full House thrown into the mix as well. And we can’t forget the incredible cameramen who did some serious acrobatics to get some of the shots that they did.

This show paid homage to the original classic from 1978 while also incorporating some changes to modernize it and make it different enough for the new generation.

For starters, Sandy Olsson from Australia was not Sandy in the live version. Sandy was Sandy Young from Utah. Frankie Valli, the teen angel, was now Boyz II Men. The Pink Ladies sang Freddy My Love at the sleepover and Doody and Danny sang Those Magic Changes in the gym when Danny was trying out different sports. These changes helped to make the live version flow really well and made it just different enough that we could still love it even though there were these changes.

The all-star cast included Vanessa Hudgens (props to her performance after recieving awful news), Mario Lopez, Carlos PenaVega, Julianne Hough, Aaron Tveit, Keke Palmer, Carly Rae Jepsen, Didi Conn (the original Frenchy), Barry Pearl (the original Doody), and Joe Jonas’ new band DNCE.

This live show was so intriguing from start to finish. Even though I’ve seen Grease more times than I can count, I could not take my eyes off the screen. The new cast made the show just as good as the original. Seeing a different version did not take away my love for the original.

The costumes and the actors’ voices, the sets and the new music; it all fit together so well and they were able to put on a flawless performance. Check out a clip below!
