A Day In The Life Of A Hostess

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

Going back to your job as a hostess during breaks can make you realize how annoying and rude some customers can be.

Hostess have to deal with a lot when it come to catering to customers like the annoying questions, the disrespect, the corny jokes about the wait time, and the impatience.

Here’s list of some things hostesses have to deal with on the daily.

1.  Calls about Reservations, or Call-head Seating!

At some restaurants, they don’t do reservations or call ahead seating because it would be a disadvantage to others who come into the restaurant. It can be very annoying when people call 24/7 about getting a reservation or call ahead seating because restaurants that have been there for 15 years have made it known they don’t do that and the rules haven’t changed. People should know that some places don’t do reservations or call ahead seating!

2. Patience is Key!

You do not know how many times a hostess has heard “Is it time?” and “How long until my buzzer goes off“. When hostess give you a wait time, they just don’t give it to you to keep you as company or to watch you starve. Hostess honestly do it for the servers in the restaurant because sometimes the restaurant can be understaffed. They can’t keep double or triple seating servers because you want to eat. If they did that you would have horrible service!

3.  “I see open tables” customers

Hostesses know that open tables are available, you don’t have to tell us! If we are on a waiting list, the people next on the list will get that table!

5.  “I’m going to the bar” customers

Hostess really don’t care if we are not on a wait and customers want to go to the bar. But, when there is a waiting list and customers tells us they are going to the bar it can be really aggravating. Some customers like to take advantage and sit themselves at a bar or high top booth and tends to mess us up on the waiting sheet.

Even though being a hostess can make you want to pull your hair out! The experience can be really rewarding and learning people skills can be helpful down the road. Just try and remember that hostesses aren’t against you Collegiettes! HCXO
