As Winthrop’s Alpha Delta Pi chapter president and an annual member on the Council of Student Leaders, Honors Program, Emerging Leaders and in Order of Omega, Michaela Dunbar is a force to be reckoned with! Michaela sat down with Her Campus and told us about her dreams as a broadcaster, her best memories on campus and her favorite spots to spend time with her sorority sisters in Charlotte.

Name: Michaela Dunbar

Major: Mass Communication (Broadcast)

Class of 2016

What is it like being the president for your chapter of Alpha Delta Pi?

Well I was elected in November and I can honestly already say it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I cannot even express how much I’ve learned about myself and others. It keeps me busy, but I would not trade it for the world! I feel so blessed!

Where do you hope to be in 5 years? 20 years?

I’m a mass communication major so “the dream” in five years is for me is to be working at a news station as a reporter and hopefully covering politics! In 20 years, I would love to live in a beach house and enjoy time with my family.

What are three words you would use to describe yourself?

Ohhh goodness, that’s a toughie. I would probably say silly, creative and positive.

What is your favorite thing about WU?

I love how much of a community there is here… coming from a small town myself, this school always makes me feel welcome and there are smiling faces everywhere. I know someone pretty much every place I go and people are always so hospitable!

What is your best memory during you time at WU?

My best memory? I literally cannot pinpoint my favorite memory but living in Thomson with my roommate Lauren last year would be on there. The late night trips to Cookout, attending events on campus with my sorority (like the hypnotist and basketball games), Homecoming is always a blast and even just spontaneous days where I get to sit and talk with friends on Scholar’s Walk.

When you aren’t busy, what do you like to do in your spare time?

Emphasis on when I’m not busy haha, but when I do get the chance, I love to light a candle and listen to music in my room. If I’m with friends I’m probably laughing ‘til I cry. I like shopping probably a little too much, I adore magazines and I call my family every chance I can. My family really keeps me grounded, but are always there to lift me up. I wouldn’t be half the person I am without them!

Favorite movie?

Hands down it would be “Gone With The Wind,” I have probably watched it about 50 times. I love the plot and the southern details are so charming and make me fall in love with it each time.

Favorite place to go in Rock Hill/ Charlotte area?

I actually just learned of this place called Studio Movie Grill in Charlotte where you can go to watch a movie and eat dinner simultaneously. I’ve only been once but I can’t wait to go back! I also really love The Yolk for brunch on the weekends! I usually get grits, eggs, sausage and toast, which they bring out to you in a cast-iron skillet. For shopping, Page 6 Boutique is perfect and I would buy pretty much everything they sell!

Favorite food/restaurant?

I love sweet tea and it’s even better out of a mason jar. If you ever see me on campus I will probably have Starbucks in one hand and my phone in the other. Also, I can never say no to a #1 combo from Chick fil A.

I am Carolyn Rennix, a CoFounder of Her Campus Winthrop and a senior mass communication major at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. I am also the editor-in-chief of Winthrop's weekly student newspaper, The Johnsonian. I enjoy feature writing, photography and blogging -- all while drinking coffee at local shops of course. I was raised in a small seaside town, but I plan to travel and see what this world has in store for a young journalist.
