7 Ways to Stay Safe on Your College Campus

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

I remember freshman year and my parents being so worried about my safety on campus. I had no clue why they were so worried and that is a common problem amoung alot of college aged women. Many of us are unaware or just plain naïve when it comes to the dangers that we face on college campuses. We live in a time where 1 in 5 women in college will experience rape or sexual assault. We are told to always be with friends and to never walk alone but we all know it is sometimes impossible to do this. That does not mean you can’t keep yourself say in other ways. Here are a few tips that I hope can help you stay safe on your college campus!

1.      Carry Pepper spray

Pepper spray is a great way to protect yourself! It is also inexpensive and can be found at your local Walmart for only $20. You can carry it on your keychain and have a sense of safety at all times. Once you first get it make sure to try it out by spraying it in a bush to make sure you know how to use it if the time comes.

2.      Be aware of your surroundings!

When walking make sure to keep looking around you. Make sure you know who is behind you and in front of you at all times!

3.      No Cellphones

Keep your head up! Looking down on your phone is an easy way for someone to catch you off guard

4.      No Music

Many people make this mistake time and time again. If you are listening to music you can’t hear if someone is approaching you which is important when you’re walking alone.

5.      Use the “Buddy System”

As we know this is not always possible but when it is please use it.

6.      Do not walk in the dark

Make sure you are always in a well lit area. Dark areas are danger zones and are a common place for most attacks.

7.      Call Campus Police

It may seem embarrassing but I promise you it’s not! If you need an escort do not hesistate to call them because they are here to protect you.

I wish that I didn’t have to write this article but unfortunately in today’s society it is neccessary! These tips can help you stay safe on your college campus and anywhere else you may be. Stay safe Collegiettes, and always be prepared!
