7 Reasons Why Everyone Should Take a Road Trip

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

My home state of California is 3,000 miles away from South Carolina, so the most cost-effective way to bring a car is to take a road trip. Of course, bringing your best friend makes it that much better. Everyone should take a road trip across the country once in their lifetime and make sure to bring a friend. Here are 7 reasons why:

1. Sleepovers:

What friendship doesn’t love sleepovers every night!  For as long as you can remember you have been having sleepovers with your best friends, but as you grew up they came around less and less often.  A road trip with your best friends ensures a trip down memory lane with sleepovers.

2. Music:

Countless hours in the car requires a fresh variety of music.  It gives you time to show off new artists that nobody else is listening to yet, as well as jam to some classics. This also gives you time to turn the music up and sing at the top of your lunges, because who doesn’t love a little karaoke sesh?

3. Sight-seeing:

Driving across the country gives you the opportunity to see not only interesting tourist destinations, but also cute, quaint little towns in the heart of America.  The “fly over states” are full of little towns with cute shops and interesting cultures not commonly seen in other parts of the country.

4. Food:

Driving through different states means different food. This includes fast food joints (In and Out Burger, Whataburger) that you can only find in certain states, as well as local restaurants that you will never find anywhere else. You will also be guaranteed a vast variety of food. Mexican in the southwest, BBQ in the Midwest, fresh seafood along the coast.

5. Long Hours in the Car:

You may think you know your best friend, but after spending hours and hours in the car with not much to do, you REALLY get to know your friend. Often times there is no cell service driving through the middle of who knows where which leaves plenty of time to talk. Whether you are reminiscing on old memories and finding out new fun quirks about them, there is no better way to pass the time. Stopping and filling your car up with gas gives the perfect excuses to load up on all your favorite snacks that you never get.

6. Night Skys:

This seems like such a small thing but it is very easy to forget how pretty the night sky really is. When you are driving across the country there are many parts with absolutely no light population and you can see every star, it is breath taking.

7. Saving Money:

While taking a road trip isn’t necessarily cheap, it is the best bang for your buck. Plane tickets across the country to ran upwards of 500 and you will only get to see one or two states. Going across the country guarantees that you will see many different destinations, while only have to pay for filling up your tank of gas.

Traveling across the country can also count as a cultural event to put towards gradaution, as well as bucket list checkmarks! Start planning your trip, Collegiettes!
