It’s impossible to describe in words the exhilarating feeling of traveling abroad. I am currently studying in Dublin, Ireland. If you are interested in studying abroad or are already planning on going, here are some important things to consider:

1.    Research your possible study-abroad locations: It was not until I landed in Dublin that I realized how long three and a half months actually was. I have never been homesick before and didn’t think I would be until I got here. Even though I am here with my best friend, which makes it easier, we are not always together. Part of the time I am traveling by myself, whether it is to my internship or running errands. Coming from the United States, I was very spoiled by having a car, living in a 5-bedroom house and having a normal size shower. In Dublin, I have no car and I have to rely on public transportation or walking to get to work and class. Everything in Europe is a lot smaller. So, make sure you research the location prior to making a final decision.

2.    Don’t study abroad to run away from problems at home: If you think you have to go to another country to be free of your problems at home, you’re wrong.  The problems will still be there when you return home after the semester is over. Instead, you should travel with the intention to learn more about yourself and the world.

3.    Be open-minded: Don’t be afraid to try new things. Studying abroad is about the experience and doing things you may never get to do again in your life. The academic part is important, but it’s also important to learn the history about the city and the places you may travel. And of course, try new foods, drinks and don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with locals. The natives are the best people to learn from because they know so much about the area and give great tips on places to eat and shop.

4.    It’s okay to be nervous: Being nervous is normal! At first, it can be scary to walk through a crowded city and have no clue where you’re going. But don’t worry, you get used to it over time and you will be able to find your way around relatively quickly. Before you know it, you’ll find your own favorite restaurants, grocery stores and coffee shops where you can relax and do homework.

5.    Get excited: This is a time in your life that you may never get to experience again! Be excited to see new places and meet new people. It’s such an thrilling time to explore and be immersed in a new culture.  It’s also a great way to learn about yourself and try new things you never thought you might like!

Happy travels!!
