5 Things That Change When You Go Greek

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

A common stereotype about girls who join sororities is that they change when they join their organizations — while that stereotype is focused on some negative changes, there are actually tons of things in your life that change for the better when you open that bid card!

1. Your wardrobe

Maybe you were the kind to dress up for class, maybe you were the kind to roll up in pajamas — either way, after recruitment, you’ll find yourself sporting letters in some form every day. If your  big has passed down t-shirts, get ready to rock that Parents Day 2010 tank top like it’s completely normal.

      2. Your vocabulary

When you go Greek, chapter is no longer a part of a book and big is no longer just the opposite of small. With all the ins and outs of Greek life comes a special name for everything, and the terminology can sound a little silly to those who aren’t in an organization.

     3. Your social circle

One of the coolest things about having a whole new group of sisters is that you’re able to branch out your circle of friends and hang out with girls that you might not have before — girls who are older or younger than you, girls with super different majors…even just girls with a different set of friends than you!

      4. Your schedule

Every sorority does things a little differently, but one thing is for sure: you’re about to get even busier than you were before. Chapter meetings, new member meetings, mixers, community service or philanthropy events, study hours, and just spending time with your new sisters…you’re booked! It can be a little hard to get used to in the beginning, but soon it’ll all be just another part of  your weekly routine.

       5. Your life

Joining a sorority is unlike anything you’ll ever do. In between all of the Comfort Colors tees and cheesy mixer themes, you’ll find yourself supporting life-changing philanthropies, getting involved on your campus, and ultimately, creating life-long bonds with women so special you call them ‘sister’.
