Nothing compares to going to salon to get a facial, a new hairstyle, or to get your nails done. But as a licensed cosmetologist I’m here to tell you, you don’t need to spend money just to look and feel your best. You can do it all from the comfort of your home. Also, keep in mind self-care isn’t always face masks, exercising, and eating healthy. There is so much more to self care, such as relaxing and watching your favorite show, taking a bubble bath, getting a coffee. Self care is whatever makes you feel your best. Of course as a cosmetologist, my job is to make my clients feel like the best version of themselves. I have clients who never been to a salon in their life or they had a bad experience so they’re afraid to go to another one. So to those of you who have not been to a salon before or who who’ve had a bad experience I’m here to give you advice on how you can practice self care at home. Instead of going to a salon, let’s bring the salon to you!

Secret #1 – Head Massages

How do you feel when you have a headache? What about when you have three papers and an exam due the next day? Do you feel stressed or tired? If so, try giving yourself a head massage. Start at the top of your hairline and massage inward gently applying pressure. You should feel the tension begin to release. Move your hands to the nape of your neck which is usually found where the hairline ends and massage using the same motion. You don’t need to use your thumbs just the tips of your fingers. Then you should feel the tension move up to the top of your head which is also known as the apex. Put all your fingers on the apex and hold your head using your thumbs. You will be amazed at how refreshed you feel after. Head massages are significant because they can help reduce headaches or stress and improve memory and attention span. Overall head massages can help the brain function better.

Secret #2 – Skin Care

Since skin is the largest organ of the body making up the integumentary system it is important to take good care of it. Growing up, I knew nothing about skin care but as I got older I realized the importance and how plays a role in self care. Having acne breakouts can make you insecure. But it is completely normal. Also remember, no skin is perfect like social media and magazines portray and all skin is different. Try placing a hot clean cloth on your face for 2-5 minutes. When doing this it helps to open up your pores allowing your skin to absorb products easier. Once you’ve cleaned your face, you then want to place a cold cloth on top of your face for 2-5 minutes to close up your pores. It feels really relaxing. There are more skincare tips to come in the next articles!

Secret #3 – Warm Bubble Bath

This tip is very common in nail salons when getting a pedicure. A warm bath is very relaxing and helps to ease the tension in your muscles. Try this after a long day from work or after a workout. Grab some Epsom salt and a bath bomb or your favorite soap and run some warm or hot water. You can also grab a cloth and do tip #2. You can read a book, watch your tv show, and just relax. After you take a bath you can then take a shower. After your bubble bath you will feel more refreshed and relaxed ready for pj’s and a cozy bed.

Remember, self-care is different for everyone. Practicing self care is important to feel your best. Do something small for yourself everyday! Reward yourself. Eat that ice-cream, go see a movie, take a bubble bath. Most importantly, dont be to hard on yourself!
