19 Times “Glee” Covers Described Life in College Perfectly

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winthrop chapter.

The Fox Network comedy that covered song after song, Glee, has sadly been off air since March 2015, but that does not mean the Gleeks out there go a day without playing the upbeat covers daily.

The series was set in a fictional high school in Ohio and New York City. The McKinley High kids have sung about every issue imaginable, from sexuality to religion. They have even given their audience some insightful tips on accepting being a loser when they sang original songs.

We can not find one character that does’t relate to us in real life. The stress they had while coming up with a setlist in the choir room is the same stress we have while figuring out what our professors are talking about in our 8 a.m. classes. So, here are 19 times the songs on Glee described college life perfectly on key.

Roots Before Branches: Move in Day

We all can agree that the moment our friends and family leave us in our new little dorm we are in both happy and sad tears. So much is in front of us, but we must leave so much of who we are behind with our loved ones. In order to have an amazing experience in college, we need to restart without our past holding us down. Cut the metaphorical song and growing new roots at college…YAY!

Don’t Stop Believing: Terrible Schedule

You had to have seen this one coming! Whether it be back-to-back classes or 8 a.m.’s everyday, we all have days that we don’t really know if we can get out of bed in the morning. This classic song is an instant motivation to get moving! If the New Directions aren’t giving up on the their club, there is no way you can give up that huge seminar class all the way across campus–so get moving!

I Believe In a Thing Called Love: Roommate Troubles

Not getting along with your roommate? Well take a lesson from Kurt and Elliott “Star Child” Gilbert. In Season 5. they were having difficultly getting on the same page and the way they mended things was with song…this song actually. I guess there is nothing The Darkness can not fix. So, jam with your roomie and laughter and friendship could follow– just like with Kurt and Elliott.

All By Myself: Still Single as a Pringle

This song is to channel your Emma Pillsbury singing in her car while it is pouring rain–a.k.a., when you see all of the new relationships flourish the first week of classes and you are sitting in your dorm hugging your jar of Nutella. Even though you are a proud and independent Collegiette, you have your moments of hormonal loneliness and that is perfectly okay. So, eat your Nutella, reapply your make-up and walk around campus a happier you after singing this song.

4 Minutes: Alarm Malfunction

Waking up from a nap and seeing you have only 4 minutes to get to class, eat food, do laundry, and pet that dog you saw walking on campus all before you have to take another nap. But hey girl, don’t forget to do all of that in true Madonna fashion.

Loser Like Me: Mismatched Mistake

This is for those mornings that you wake up with a smile on your face when you hear your alarm go off. You take a shower, pick out the cutest outfit and spray on some fruity perfume because today is your day! The sun is shining and you walk to the dining hall for a super healthy bowl of fruit salad before class and realize you are wearing your shower shoes. But–who even cares that you look odd wearing rubber flip flops because you are too happy to think twice about it and flaunt your new trend all day long! Dare anyone to call you a loser while you listen to this song.

I’m the Greatest Star: Successful Mid-Term Mindset

College is nothing like high school. You actually have to study…who knew? But half of the battle in acing the classes is your attitude. So, you study every day for the first midterm and you feel on top of the world because you know the information from front to back…you are the best there is. That is that positive attitude that will get you feeling powerful before the test. You will definitely feel like the greatest star when you walk out of your class with your A+.

Hate On Me: Pajama Day

We all can admit to having those days where we do not feel like getting out of bed, but we have to because we have class. The solution? Wearing your pajamas to class. People will stare, but secretly they’re haters and jealous that they didn’t have enough confidence to wear their over sized t-shirts and fuzzy pants to their seminar.

Stronger: Just Say No to the Ice Cream

The all you can eat dessert bar in the dining hall has gotten to you and you have to say enough is enough. This Britney Spears cover is the perfect song to push you as you hit the gym to work off the freshman 15. Now every time you pass the soft serve ice cream machine you only give in 50 percent of the time.

What Ever Happened to Saturday Nights: Study Cram Sessions

This is the question you ask yourself when you are looking out the window of the library on the weekend. You wish you were out eating fast food and dancing with your gal pals, but instead your last exam of the semester is in two days and you are being a responsible student studying like Elle Woods when she was studying for the LSAT when the other sororities were having fun. Do not fret Collegiette, winter break is almost here.

I’ll Be Home For Christmas: WINTER BREAK

This means home cooked meals, your old bed, and family time. You don’t want to admit it, but you have missed your crazy family a lot. You feel a new sense of warmth that rejuvenates you for the new semester to come!

Raise Your Glass: Friday Nights

No more classes until Monday so that means time to let loose! The Warblers definitely know how to dance to a P!nk song. Dance your heart out with your friends, you deserve it.

Bad: Sorry Not Sorry Shower Edition

After a full day of classes and not having any time to yourself you take a long hot shower. You are so tired you do the disgraceful act of not cleaning you hair out of the drain…a major taboo, but tonight just isn’t the night to mess with the little things. That calls for a little MJ in the background as you walk back to your room.

Don’t Rain On My Parade: Rain Please Go Away

Of course the day you straighten your hair, the clouds and rain show up. Grab that umbrella and rain boots and do not let Mother Nature dampen your day. Channel Rachel Berry as you walk all the way across campus for your class.

Take On Me: Internship/Job Applications

Summer time is almost here and being the ambitious young woman that you are, you want to spend your summer break making bank. So you apply to as many jobs or internships as possible. You have built up your resume so much this past year that your application screams “TAKE ON ME”. Trust yourself, they will!!

Uptight: Attitude Check

Okay so, after your 500th meltdown over tests, extracurriculars. and trying to find time to take a nap, you get pretty tired, right? It gets to a point you mind just says stop! Those are the days you love your subconscious self for waking you up out of your funk. Suddenly you are calm and not so uptight anymore, and you can get so much more stuff done now. Yay brains!

The Final Countdown: Summer?

As the last month of the semester comes, you can’t help but have a little countdown on your calendar for when you can sleep in everyday and live on the beach with your friends.  You feel on edge with your classes and know you have the power to kick butt even with the summer fever you have.

This Time: Graduation

You have survived the best four years of your life. The sentimental tears are about to start. What does the future hold for you? It’s hard to tell, but this emotional song was well fit for Rachel Berry in her new chapter of her life, so it will certainly do for you too!

I Lived: Memories

The final cover in the Glee series is the perfect nostalgic song to describe the times you have had with your friends in college. Aw, looking back at your photo feed of all of the memories you have had.

So yes Collegiettes who also double as Gleeks–it has sadly been over a year now since we have been able to sit down and sing along with the McKinley kids, but their songs will live with us forever.

Remember: “Being apart of something doesn’t make you special, something is special because you are apart of it.” -Rachel Berry
