Born and raised in the state of hockey, you would think those of us who call Minnesota “home” would be pretty much experts at ice skating, but in reality, we are not. So here are some thoughts from someone who goes ice skating for the first time, or has gone but took a 10 year break from it.

On the way there and getting the skates on: I’m so excited! I’ve been waiting FOREVER to do this!

Seeing everyone who is already on the ice: Everybody is making it seem so easy!

On the walkway to the ice: Okay, act like you know what you are doing – you can’t fall yet, you’re not even on the ice! Also, I got the hang of this whole walking-with-skates-not-on-the-ice deal, maybe it won’t be as bad as I think it will be!

Few steps on the ice: Here I go!

After you get back up and feel embarrassed: No one saw that right?! I HOPE no one I know is here and saw that!

After you have taken a few strides on the ice and start to get the hang of it: That fall was just a fluke – I GOT THIS!!

When you (almost) fall again: Oh sh** DON’T FALL AGAIN! You are allowed only one fall today!

After a long time of no falling: Hey, this is not bad at all actually!

After another fall: Okay, maybe I need to be done for the day…

On the way back home after you are done for the day: That was actually a lot of fun! I’m going to  go every weekend until I get the hang of ice skating!

Meet Linsey Taylor, one of the campus correspondents for the Winona State Her Campus chapter. Linsey is a senior majoring in Therapeutic Recreation with a minor in psychology and hopes to become a child life specialist with her degree. In her free time, Linsey enjoys reading, watching Netflix, and hanging out with friends and family.
Meet our writer Courtney D. Jones! Courtney is a junior at Winona State University majoring in Mass Communications- Advertising. She is consistently busy juggling school, working two jobs, and on the recruitment committee for Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority, so coffee is a necessity. But not just any coffee, it must be Starbucks Blonde Roast, with a dash of peppermint mocha creamer and a fourth of a packet of sugar. She has a die-hard love for all things beauty and fashion, and dreams of owning everything on her Pinterest boards one day. With her bright and bubbly personality, she loves meeting new people and sharing a good laugh. As a Chicago native, her happy place consists of drinking a cold microbrew with her favorite Giordano’s deep-dish pizza while watching her beloved Bears team.
