OktoBEERfest 2018

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

I had been looking forward to going to Oktoberfest in La Crosse, Wisconsin, for quite a few weeks. My day started off unusually bad. I had an exam in my first class that didn’t go well, I forgot my book for my second class, and I found out my new phone was going to take an extra week to ship to me, etc. I could just tell that this day was not going to be my day.

I finally got through all of my classes and was very excited for my brother to arrive so we could start turning my day around. We decided to go eat lunch at the restaurant where I work, and that was going great. Towards the end of us eating, my ex-boyfriend walked in the door who I hadn’t seen in over a month.

Yet again, this day did not seem to be going well at all. After lunch, I went home to start getting ready to head to the Oktoberfest grounds. I tried curling my hair, but I recently cut about 8 inches off of it, and I am still learning how to style it right. I had been doing well with curling it lately, but this time, it went all sorts of wrong. It was too poofy, the curls weren’t holding, weirdly flat in the back, and the ends were not curls they were just dents.

At this point, I was wondering if anything could possibly go right on this day. My brother calmed me down and brushed my hair out for me, and then I curled it for the third time. This time, it actually came out looking okay, and I was thinking more positively.

We decided it was time to head to La Crosse and check out the festivities. We put the location in our GPS and when we arrived, we had no idea where we were. We walked up and down where it said we should be and we could not find the grounds at all. We were starting to get very cold, so we gave up and decided to stop at a random bar and get a drink.

This bar was very small but very warm and inviting, and it had Spotted Cow. We decided to have a beer while we figured out what we were going to do. As we were sitting in the bar, we noticed they had some really cool Oktoberfest T-shirts.

We sat there for awhile and our friends told us to come over to their apartment downtown, so we gave up on the idea of visiting the Oktoberfest grounds. Truthfully, I did not actually make it to Oktoberfest (as the title of this article suggests), but I did celebrate it.

The day started looking up from there on. We arrived at my friend’s apartment where everyone was playing games. Plus, there were snacks everywhere (I was very hungry).

After a while of playing drinking games and listening to really good music, we decided to go check out the bars downtown. I have no more pictures from my night, but I can say that this GIF represents my activities for the rest of the evening…

I danced all night long with my friends, and I had the most amazing time. Maybe that day hadn’t been so bad after all. Maybe someday in the future I will actually make it to Oktoberfest.
