At the beginning of each month, there is the renewed promise of roughly 30 days full of exciting possibilities. Netflix takes these opportunities and refreshes its removals of beloved TV shows and movies, but also introduces us to ones we never knew we wanted to see. This month, I thought I’d give my insight to the programs I’m most excited for and the ones that will be met with bittersweet goodbyes.

ARRIVING

October 1:

·      Miss Congeniality and Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous – For those who are Sandra Bullock movie buffs, these are must-sees where she plays an undercover cop posing as a beauty pageant competitor to seek out a bomb. It’s a typical turning ‘geek to glamorous’ movie, but Bullock’s carrying a gun in her purse instead of lip gloss. Witty banter, wacky makeover montages, and hunky Benjamin Bratt as Bullock’s partner make this movie a great addition to any Netflix queue.

·      I Love You, Man – Paul Rudd plays a newly engaged man who is having trouble finding groomsmen to be in the wedding. Enter Jason Segel who Rudd entertains on a “man-date” that his fiance, Rashida Jones, insists he take seriously. Segel and Rudd become an unlikely dynamic duo with hilarity ensuing along the way.

October 5

·      The Fosters (Season 5) – Stef and Lena Adams-Foster have their hands full with five kids (four of them started out as fosters). Each kid carries their own struggles, but it’s a house that is full of love. The show focuses on the individual growth of each kid and the tumultuous marriage of Stef and Lena. However, the most important message from the show is that “family” is for those we love most, not just those that share DNA. Seasons 1-4 are also on Netflix (packed with drama) and will tide you over until the release of Season 5.

October 13

·      Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby – Shake and bake, baby! This movie never fails to have me in laughing hysterics with Will Ferrell portraying a NASCAR driver on the outs. He is forced to face off with his hilarious best friend turned fiercest competitor Cal, played by John C. Reilly, on the race track. If you struggle when it comes to picking something to watch on Netflix, this is a no-brainer.

October 17

·      Patton Oswalt: Annihilation – Sketch comedy specials have really erupted on Netflix these past few months and Oswalt is one of my favorites. His jokes are topical, relatable and always feature a healthy dose of fatherly anecdotes. His other special is titled Talking for Clapping, and it’s also one of my go-to shows because the jokes get funnier every time I hear them!

October 27

·      Stranger Things 2 – Grab your Eggos! Four kids uncover a dark world beneath the surface of one of their board games. Consequently, evil arrives in Hawkins, Indiana after one of their friends disappears. A mysterious girl named Eleven seems to be the answer to finding their missing friend, but where did she come from? This season is bound to be just as creepy and comical as the last one and arrives just in time for Halloween.

LEAVING

October 1

·      30 Rock (Seasons 1-7) – Liz Lemon and company will no longer be entertaining Netflix with their quick-witted humor and genuine love of their jobs at the sketch comedy series TGS with Tracy Jordan. However, if you’ll miss female comic powerhouse women Tina Fey and Jane Krakowski on 30 Rock and are looking for some way to soothe the soul, they are also a riot in  Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

·      One Tree Hill (Seasons 1-9) – This one hurts. The series begins with the rivalry of which Scott half-brother will make the Tree Hill Ravens basketball team, but the show quickly transforms into something so much deeper and totally binge-worthy. As the show unfurls, there is never a shortage of drama, romance and crazy twists/turns (plus a crazy awesome soundtrack). OTH is definitely one of my all-time favorite shows and I highly recommend finding them on DVD. Don’t say I never gave you anything.

·      Titanic – Never let go, Jack! Unfortunately, Netflix is not heeding the same plea Rose gave to Jack, but thankfully this tragic love story is on DVD at my house.

October is the perfect month for pumpkin patches and fall festivities, but when you’re ready to crash on the couch and stream some new shows, this month is full of possibilities!

My name is Hannah Hippensteel, and I like to say I'm a Chicago city-slicker, but I'm actually from the 'burbs. I'm currently a senior at Winona State with a major in mass communication-journalism and a minor in sociology. Catch me enjoying all Winona has to offer: the bluffs, the incomparable Bloedow's Bakery, and not to mention, Minnesota boys. With a goal of working at Teen Vogue, Seventeen or Glamour magazine, I'm soaking up every opportunity to keep my finger on the pulse and share my personal voice!
Hi I'm Emily and I'm from Appleton, Wisconsin! I'm a Mass Communication- Advertising student, with a minor in Art History at WSU. I like concerts, hockey, cooking, and dancing in the car. I also enjoy guacamole, french fries, and caramel iced coffees from Dunkin' Donuts. All I really want to do is travel the world, move to a big city, and spend my weekends on a lake.
