FALLing into a New Season with Summer Clothes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

What’s worse than being cold? Being hot! Maybe vice versa for you, but either way, we want to be comfortable and cute during the transition from 75 and sunny to 50 and breezy. I raided closets, spent too much time on Pinterest, and may or may not have gone shopping to complete my wardrobe for this chilly weather. I tried to find the mix between dressy and cozy, summer and winter pieces, and bright and dark.

Can’t part with your favorite summer dress? Add tights and a jacket and switch out your sandals for booties. Dress it up with heels and jewelry; keep it effortless with a top-knot bun and big reading glasses.

The worst part about college: feeling cold walking to class and then burning up in class. Keep it cool yet snug with a thin tank underneath your biggest cardigan. Play around with colors or keep it monochrome with grays and whites.

Whenever I feel like my outfit is missing something, I try it with a vest—bingo! This will block out the frigid breeze and add texture or color to your outfit. Bonus points if it has a hood.

Let’s be honest: riding boots aren’t all that thermal. To keep your toes warm, put on some thick, knitted knee-high socks. These socks bring your outfit from 0 to 100 real quick.

Keep your outfit comfortable with loose boyfriend jeans instead of tight skinny jeans. Pair them with an oversized sweater and sneakers or make it fancy with a blouse and heels.

Wrap up in a woolly blanket scarf for added style and heat. With blanket scarves, there are numerous ways to tie it around your neck for endless styling possibilities. My personal favorite way to wear scarves is with my hair in a high ponytail or bun.

That chilled gust of air can give you a bad hair day in a split second. Keep your mane tame with a hat. Give off a chill vibe with joggers and a beanie; look sporty with your favorite leggings and a baseball cap.

Go straight to yoga after class with these bohemian-esque pants. Find ones with spunky patterns or ones with deep colors to get in the autumn mood.

Use that flowy, white long sleeve from those summer nights in the city and find it in a fall-appropriate color like burnt orange or olive green.

Switch out your black Vans with some block-heel booties. These pair well with distressed jeans or even leggings. Accessorize with a black velvet choker for some added grunge.

My go-to is a scoop-neck tee with a flannel, jeans, and Converse—spice it up with a Halloween shirt. Take inspiration from these outfits and use the summer pieces you already have and adjust them to be winter pieces, too! Don’t forget mittens and proper boots once that snow hits…as for the fall, wear your cute vest before it’s too cold!
