8 Shopping Tips to Keep You on Track this Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

With Christmas just around the corner, there’s only so much time and effort you have to put into getting gifts for your loved ones. These are some easy tips as we swing into the full rush of holiday shopping.

1. Make a list when setting out to buy presents for the holidays. It can be easy to go overboard when buying gifts. This will keep you focused on the goals you set. This will also keep you from looking for holiday inspiration and finding something with a big price tag.

2. Have a budget in mind before you start buying any presents. This will keep you from spending more than you can afford.

3. Focus on one present at a time!

4. Start as early as you possibly can. Thinking about gifts throughout the year can have you more prepared to know what to get your loved ones. It can also help you prepare to save up your money if you’re aiming for a more extravagant gift.

5. Research the best prices for gifts—compare different prices found online and located in ads. This will allow you to know what the best deal for any gift you want to buy is.

6. When out buying gifts for other people, it can be tempting to treat yourself. People often think they need to buy themselves a present too. This is a bad practice to have especially when the goal is to maximize your money while buying gifts for others.

7. One of the easiest tips I can give when it comes to finding the best deals possible is to compare prices for whatever it is you’re buying someone for a gift. An easy tool that I use regularly when online shopping is a service called Honey. It is a browser extension that can be easily downloaded. This service compares the best prices for your specified product across different websites and scans for any coupons that can be found online.

8. Another great resource can be found on Amazon or several other sites, you can commonly find suggested gifts based on people’s interests, genders, relation to yourself, or what kind of gift you’d like to get the person. For example, if you go to Amazon while logged into your account, you can click the Account & Links button and further click, ‘Find a gift.’ This opens up a page that lists gifts by different categories to narrow your search. You can also narrow the search by your specified price range such as under fifty dollars.

Good luck with trying to find gifts for everyone on your list. Hopefully, this list can provide you with some helpful advice for your holiday shopping this year.

Hi, I'm Isabella. I'm an aspiring writer and an avid reader. I'm most at home reading a new book with my dogs by my side. I'm just starting out at Winona this year as a Senior and it's already turning out to be a good year.
My name is Hannah Hippensteel, and I like to say I'm a Chicago city-slicker, but I'm actually from the 'burbs. I'm currently a senior at Winona State with a major in mass communication-journalism and a minor in sociology. Catch me enjoying all Winona has to offer: the bluffs, the incomparable Bloedow's Bakery, and not to mention, Minnesota boys. With a goal of working at Teen Vogue, Seventeen or Glamour magazine, I'm soaking up every opportunity to keep my finger on the pulse and share my personal voice!
