5 Delicious Dishes for Your 2021 Thanksgiving Table

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

We can all admit 2021’s Thanksgiving is not going to be much different than last year’s. With multiple states in the U.S. hitting a record number of average new daily COVID-19 cases, the prospect of having a “normal” Thanksgiving seems out of touch. Some families have people in the hospital while others are not meeting to prevent transmission.

Arguably, this Thanksgiving has opened many people’s eyes, including mine, regarding things to be thankful for. Although we cannot be with our families, many people are lucky enough to say that their family members have survived COVID-19 thus far.

Whether you are able to celebrate with your family or you are celebrating alone, I have come up with five entrees to bless your Thanksgiving table and add another twist to an otherwise unfamiliar Thanksgiving meal.

1. Bacon-Wrapped Brussel Sprouts

Personally, I like brussel sprouts, but many people do not. If you cannot get over their earthy flavor, try wrapping them in thin-sliced bacon and sticking them in the oven. The bacon flavor will overpower most of the earthiness, and it also adds a nice textural variety.

2. Turkey Stuffed Green Peppers

This is easiest to do with ground turkey, but pulled turkey will work as well. All you have to do is fry the meat, onions, minced or diced garlic, your favorite seasonings, and olive oil in a frying pan. Then stuff your bell peppers, and toss them in the oven.

3. Au Gratin Potatoes

I get it; mashed potatoes are a Thanksgiving staple! However, this recipe still incorporates the versatile vegetable but adds a nice little twist. There are numerous recipes out there, but whatever one you choose… make sure you sprinkle the top with breadcrumbs for a scrumptious crunch.

4. Turkey Pot Pie

In the U.S., Pot Pies are a classic dish. However, they are not on most families’ Thanksgiving tables. I am here to argue they should be! Not only do they take less time to cook than a whole turkey, but they are extremely filling due to the breading.

5. Habanero Pumpkin Pie a la Mode

Do not let the title scare you away! The coolness of the ice cream balances the spiciness of the pie. This recipe is just like your classic pumpkin pie recipe, but you add minced habanero peppers or ground habanero.

Whether you decide to try these new dishes or stick to your classics, be thankful for what you have. Too many people around the world are struggling, maybe even yourself, but if there was ever a time when a little extra positivity was needed, that time is now.

Happy Thanksgiving!
